Candid Camera was a huge mega hit. It got to be such a hit that when people ran into strange situations, they started to look around for the camera. I remember watching it with my mom & dad. Strange that it was such a hit, but there were very few copycat shows.

I like to watch similar YouTube videos where they secretly film and set up a 'social experiment' like ask people for money for gas at a gas station and then reward anyone who gives the person help.

I think that they tried to revive Candid Camera years later, but the revival didn’t last long. It just wasn’t outrageous enough by today’s standards, and had long been supplanted by the ongoing extremes of reality shows. Some of the spirit of Candid Camera might be said to live on in shows like America’s Funniest Videos, but how many times can you watch people falling down and men getting hit in the groin before it’s stupid and offensive rather than funny?
