Snake in the Grass (or on the sidewalk)

Opened the back gate after walking my dog today and stepped on a big black snake. It slithered into my garage. I used a five-wood to try to urge it to leave the garage, then gave up.

It's a black racer, harmless, eats mice, so I guess we'll co-exist. My wife is not happy about it. Maybe I should have used a different club?

Shiverssssssssssssssssssssssss. I saw a clip in FB of a BIG black racer trying to find a way to get into a house. You are right; they are fast. I would not have stood a few feet away from it.... to video tape it. Shiversssssssssssssssssssssss.
As a kid I collected, traded and sold snakes. Caught a few black racers. We lived near the Tarpon Zoo, a big wholesaler of snakes and other animals, they would pay a little.

Black racers bite, but have very small teeth and no venom. When you grab one it can bite you a dozen times or more in a few seconds. Sometimes the pinprick teeth drew a drop or two of blood but not much.

The hard part was catching one, they are lightning fast. About the only way we could do it was to team up and trap one against the house. All involved had to be ready and willing to grab quickly, and take the barrage of bites. I chased a whole lot more than I caught.

As I said, one of my favorite snakes.

One morning, I was waiting for my cousin to come over, and I went upstairs to take a quick shower before he got here. When I came downstairs, as I glanced into the living room, I saw a snake! I ran into the garage to get my gardening gloves, and when I came back upstairs, the snake was gone. I looked around and noticed the mat by the door that I wiped my feet on when I came in from the yard was raised up in the corner. I went over to the mat, lifted it up, and there was the snake. Then I grabbed it, opened the screened door and flung it into the yard.

I'm not sure what kind of snake it was. It wasn't a garter snake because it was too big. When sh*t like that happens, I try not to overthink it ... otherwise, I'd be paralyzed, lol. A few weeks later, I found another snake in my basement sleeping on some wood flooring I had stored down there. This one was a little smaller. At least I didn't have to chase him! I grabbed it by both ends and walked it to the back of my property, where off he went. 🐍

There are only 4 Venomous snakes in the entire U.S. And there is only 1 in California (Rattlesnake). All are easy to recognize.
Water Mocassin (also known as the Cottonmouth). Found only near water:
Where Do Snakes Live

Coral Snake. (highly venomous, but very unwilling to bite. Children are attracted to its colors & often handle them for hours)
an eastern coral snake

Copperhead
Copperhead snakes have a distinctive hourglass-shaped pattern.

Rattlesnake (California's only venomous snake) Note the rattles, thick body & large, triangle-shaped head.
Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis helleri). Portrait of a Southern Pacific Rattlesnake. rattlesnake stock pictures, royalty-free photos & images

Any snake you see (in the U.S.) that isn't one of these is harmless
