I remember that show well, and I loved that song. The cameramen were instructed to not film Elvis' lower body, because Sullivan thought Presley's hip gyrations were too lewd. I think for his second appearance later, they showed him in full view.
 

Now this is interesting.

I'm a big music fan, as I've mentioned a few hundred times. As an oldster, I have only just managed to gain an appreciation for Bill Hailey's Rock Around the Clock! Seriously! When I was younger, it would get played at most parties, and I was one of the dudes in the corner wanting something more modern. As such, I grew a real dislike for the song.

But recently I remembered a record cover from back in those days, and I looked it up. It was Bill Hailey, and I played the song on Youtube. For the first time, I actually enjoyed it! Just goes to show, sometimes it just takes the right moment.

What a great find! I love looking at vintage videos and pics of earlier L.A.
I recognized quite a bit of it. The first segment was on Wilshire Blvd. heading towards downtown L.A. The Carnation Bldg. is prominent.
The next segment was driving south on Fairfax Ave. passing Wilshire. You can see the old May Co. Bldg. on the corner. The segment following, I couldn't recognize.
Then there's some rare footage driving first east, then west on Ventura Blvd. in the San Fernando Valley between Canoga Park and Woodland Hills. It's wild to see it so empty!

I first went to L.A. in 1959, then later lived there a couple of different times, finally leaving in '84.

Great song! As you remember it was a hit in 1954, and when it was included in the film Blackboard Jungle (1955) with Glenn Ford, it really became a symbol for the rebellious youth of the 1950s. Plus it was a great jitterbug song...;)
