So many old cookbooks I just can't part with.

I emptied out a cabinet today that I had stuffed with old cookbooks that I've collected for years. Some I still use. A few are from the late 1800s. My daughter can't understand why I keep them. When she wants a recipe she gets on the computer and prints out recipes she has saved or looks up new ones. It just isn't the same as thumbing through an old cookbook. I read them like a novel.
I will go through them but I'm pretty sure almost all will go back in the cabinet. I'm not ready to part with them. book case (800x600).jpgcookbooks use (800x600).jpg

Wow Ruth you must have cooked up some good plates for everyone....I think you should keep em' till you're absolutely ready to depart with them even if you dont use em much...they bring you good memories and that counts for something right! All the younger generation looks up recipes and prints em' out but Ive done it too....

I agree with PopsnTuff Ruth, I would keep them also if I were you. Wow, I can't believe you have some from the 1800s, I'm surprised they're not too fragile to even turn the pages. I'd be proud of that collection!

I'm another cook book collector and also read them as some people read novels. Great bed time reading. No plot to get into that will keep me awake all night.

I feel your pain, some of them are like old friends.

I hate to part with the cookbooks that tell a story about the author an area of the country a time gone by etc...

I also have some of the old cookbooks that I learned to cook from when I was growing up.

This is the first one that I remember using in my grandmother's kitchen.

Yes it is Howdy. I got the set of dishes as a kid and my son bought me the doll a few years ago. I would never give them up. I've told the family I ate my dinner on those dishes for several years as a child and I'm going out eating my mush in my Howdy Doody bowl.
Hey Ruth, is that a Howdy Doody in the cabinet? If so, definitely hang onto him. ;)

I am having trouble parting with my cookbooks also. Read them like novels too. Love the church ones.

You can't beat the dessert recipes in the church ones. They have evolved over the years and didn't get into the internet. A bit more pineapple or a bit more cream cheese.

The internet? They want you to subscribe, etc., etc., etc. and the recipes don't always have the print option and if they do they don't always work.

I noticed that also Camper. A little more butter, cream or whatever really makes a difference. Just recently I made a casserole that I have been making for years. It turned out tasteless. I realized that the can size of some of the ingredients I used was short a couple of ounces. Now I have to open 2 cans in order to get the flavor back into the dish. I think they have added more water to margarine as well.
