Aeroplane is the UK spelling, I believe. The United States uses airplane.

What about Aircraft? I used that term a lot. I have heard pilots say airframe, airliner and just the word ship.

I also heard pilots that flew older planes call their plane: heap and old piece of junk.

When I first moved to Canada this word confused me for a long time. I’d known it as aeroplane. Suddenly I was introduced to airplane. I remember getting it wrong in a spelling test.

It's like the difference between a lift and an elevator or a flat and and an apartment. Aeroplane to the British and airplane to the Americans.

Apparently, the Wright brothers called it a "flying machine & it came to be known as the Wright Flyer. Merriam-Webster said the work airplane didn't appear until three years after the first flight.

You got my curiosity up so I fell down the rabbit hole.

Quite a few aerodromes, mostly disused but some still operational round the coast here. A short distance from here is remains of RAF Banff, known locally as Boyndie DROME.
We say aeroplane, or simply, plane. Small planes are usually 'light aircraft'. Airplane sounds like some sort of DIY tool.
