I started my first real job in 1974 for an annual salary of $7,500.00/year.
Good thinking chic: I was having morning coffee with 2 young ladies and their parents this morning. The parents and I have all turned 80 and one of the girls asked me "What is it like to be 80?". I told her the secret to old age is to always "Think Young" and you'll stay young. They thought that was a great saying. And of course, good health helps as well, and always be active.I was still a teenager. I'm not going to let a number make me feel like a fossil now.

LOL. Bill Gates was barely out of diapers in 1958. Howzat for an image?Bet you had a heck of a time taking those home every night.
I was more referring to the personal computer that's ubiquitous today. In 1958, Bill Gates didn't even have the dream to have one in every house yet.
I was '75. I remember thinking when I was a teen that being out of school for 50 years was so bizarre... ugh... and now here we are. Will you be having a reunion to attend, @Eupher ? I won't be getting anywhere NEAR mine next year.I graduated high school in 1974. Yikes!
No, I don't think so. I know that a reunion is being planned, but traveling to get there and the logistics needed doesn't lend itself well. I never stayed in that area (suburb of Detroit) very long after HS either.I was '75. I was way past being a teenager in 1974. I don't feel like a fossil, but I can guarandamtee you that I look like one!I was still a teenager. I'm not going to let a number make me feel like a fossil now.
I won a hundred bucks on that fight. For me a lot of money. Seems like yesterday.1974, the year of the resignation of United States President Richard Nixon following the Watergate scandal.
1974, the year of the boxing match known as: The Rumble in the Jungle (Zaire.) Muhammed Ali knocked out George Foreman in round eight.
Seems like only yesterdaySaw this in my social media feed... there's that first initial "say what?" thinking the person made a typo... but it wasn't one.
"And just like that, 1974 was 50 years ago."
And what a fight that was. It showed the genius of M. Ali. After Foreman had previously annihilated Joe Frazier, I thought Foreman would completely throttle Ali. But Ali invented the "rope-a-dope", which caused Foreman to wear himself out. Then Ali was able to knock him out. I can't imagine any other fighter that would have thought up the plan, and then to patiently carry it out.I won a hundred bucks on that fight. For me a lot of money. Seems like yesterday.
While remembering events from 50 years ago is sobering and perhaps horrifying, there are consolations from being that old, and one might even say that we have certain “superpowers”…like, if the air conditioning goes out, we know that we can function without it!
Elders are supposed to be wise, I am oldWe are The Elders now.
We had that happen a few weeks ago for 24 hours -- I had to throw food away.I'm not so sure about that. The power went out here for a while yesterday and it was over 90 degrees. Suddenly the whole house got so quiet that it was very unnerving. Nothing running... nothing humming... nothing buzzing 'cept my tinnitus.
Way creepy!
My fridge, avocado green, was built about 1971. When it comes on, the whole house shakes. It's good for my balance. We had that happen a few weeks ago for 24 hours -- I had to throw food away.
The quiet made me realize just how much racket our darn refrigerator makes! Can't they do something about that?
Ours moans a lot like someone in the throes of....uh.....passion. I resent my refrigerator having more fun than me.My fridge, avocado green, was built about 1971. When it comes on, the whole house shakes. It's good for my balance.
Well not a job but a scholarship at $9,600 per year for two years.
I pick up an "accent" in your writing; very subtle.Yes, (with plane tickets) was my ticket to start life in a new continent.
it doesn't make you sound old.. you're younger than most of us hereIn 1974 I was just starting my sophomore year of high school.
Graduated in 77 and we'll probably have our 50th reunion in 3 years.
Makes me sound old, but honest, I'm not.
