Social Media Bullying

We hear about all the problems caused by "Social Media", school
children bullied, anorexia people ridiculed etc., etc., etc.

All or most forums have "Algorithms" built in to stop the use of
offensive words, mainly swear words or the names of certain parts
of the human body.

Why don't the platforms for these places add to the banned content
by blocking offensive statements and suggestions, is it too much to
do this, too much for it all to built in at the design stage and anybody
who wants to start a forum for whatever purpose, has to read the
terms and conditions and the contents of the algorithms, then ask
the owners of the basic platform to remove certain parts?

That might stop some heartache, I have seen families crying because
their child has died after being bullied, or decried about their bodies.

I hope that I am not boring you and that you understand what I am
trying to get across.

Mike.

But what…exactly….is bullying? Is it direct or indirect? Blatant or perceived? I sort of think when society tried to end bullying we also ended peoples ability to develop a thick skin and cope. Being able to handle a bully is learned behavior. Most of us have probably been teased. Some of us have been chased, ridiculed, beat up and more. And some of us who have had all those things happen have learned we can be great without those naysayers.

would be impossible. How would anything stop the words.. ''I'm going to kick your head in next time I see you '' for example..

or you mother is a cow and everyone else hates her, .. or I'm going to tell everyone it was you who stole the money from teachers bag... ( see what I mean) ''?... easier ways to bully than using profanity..

Why is the parent not more involved in the child's life so they can deal with this sort of thing before it's out of hand? Social media really isn't that far removed from playground bullying, but parents today ARE that much removed from their kids lives.
There are children that withhold information from the parents for whatever reasons. The may be embarrassed, ashamed of the slur, don't want to add to the parent's daily burdens, or simply push away from the parents and try to stand on their own. It is very difficult being a child today. At times, even harder being a good parent.

The parent is not more involved because some of the parents are worse that the child.
In many cases they were bullied as a child and grow up to be bullies themselves.
A tragic cycle.

Profitability is the driving force. Conflict means engagement and engagement means profit.
There are many things that could be done to address the down side of internet exposure it's just not profitable and so the will to do it doesn't exist...
You're not boring at all...

Mike, this topic is anything but boring. I so wish parents would take control of the devices that take their children online.

The platforms are often the offenders more so than the young people using them. They hire people called influencers to shape the thoughts of the kids. For girls that often means their body image, concerning what they eat, what they wear, how they act. The influencers are the same thing as the popular girls at school. They develop a following and whatever the influencer promotes is what her followers want. They diet their way to starvation if the influencer pushes being thin. If she pushes sex then they sleep with the boys and talk about it online. Who they follow is what rules their life.

Think about the mean girls at school. When it's online it's like it's on steroids. There is a much bigger group being mean and hateful and it has a much greater effect on the other kids.

TIK TOK is a Chinese platform and has been said to be particularly bad for this as well as scooping up everyone's data. Our state and federal government agencies are banning TIK TOK on government owned devices.

AI should be able to detect bullying and personal attacks in online posts. An enterprising individual could set up an AI service with plug-ins that could be used in forums and other forms of social media. I suspect that someone or probably many people are already working on that.

The reason we can't discuss politics in SFs is because it always leads to personal attacks. Some people can't defend their opinions without insulting those who disagree with them. Being an a-hole is a way of life for them.

We can kick this around for ages, it can be done, it can't
be done, it is easy, it is difficult, etc., etc., etc.

Here we have GCHQ, (Government Communications Headquarters),
this establishment is supposed to be able to listen to and decipher
telephone calls, from anywhere in the World, pretty hard to believe,
but that is what they say.

Anyway, if it is half true then the software is already available, to pick
up anything bad being so something can be done legally, it should be
made available to block a lot of bad feeling.
