Not to minimize but be grateful because things could be worse. Over 1,400 killed in south Asia flooding. Especially India.

Ironically they too suffer from some poor planning and building in areas known to flood from extreme weather. Increased population and density, construction and traffic helps makes these things worse.

I have been thinking about the Asian floods too. The monsoons regularly create massive flooding and the problems are magnified by a number of factors. One is simply overpopulation. The people have to live somewhere hence the large numbers of people living in the flood plains. Poor infrastructure is another. Drainage is inadequate and apparently litter in the form of discarded plastics is compounding this problem. As the soil becomes covered in concrete, drainage issues become even more difficult.

India, like many other countries, has a wealth disparity problem. While money is concentrated in very few hands there will never be enough spent on infrastructure, much less on ensuring the safety of the homes of the poorer working class.
 

I heard of that disaster too, although not much. My heart goes out to the survivors, and may the victims rest peacefully.
