Here in The New Forest Beaulieu causes all sorts tongue twisting. It should be pronounced Bewley but it rarely is.The name Cockburn reminds me of an advertisement for Cockburn's port. The scene is that a Royal Navy captain is sharing a port with a Russian captain...
Russian.. You call this port Cock Burn
R.N. It's pronounced Coburn
Russian .. So, I come from Mos cock
R.N. Yes, I imagine you do
UK names can be difficult too, often because they are derived from other languages. The name of the village where I live is derived from Scots Gaelic, but it's easy to pronounce. Other names are nigh impossible to pronounce unless you come from Scotland or N.Ireland. Take for example the ancestral home of Lord Byron, Gight castle, or the small town of Ahoghill .
...co-incidentally I'm going to visit Belvoir castle soon. The English vounty of Lincolnshire has an ancestral home called Belvoir Castle in the Vale of Belvoir. Seriously, it is pronounced 'Beaver'.
Don't forget Menzies..which is pronounced Mingess..In Ayrshire, there is the ancestral home of the Kennedy, Culzean castle. pronounced Cullane,
Near Edinburgh, which is not pronounced Edin burg, is the House of the Binns, the ancestral home of the Dalyell pronounced D-L family.
The surname Dalziel is also pronounced D-L.
Any idea how to convert that into a shortened version. This is nothing in comparison to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in Wales.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyll - Wikipedia
it's usually shortened to Llanfair PG...by the locals ..and the full pronunciation is this..Any idea how to convert that into a shortened version.
Like Elizabeth has been shortened to
Bessie
Beth
Bette
ELISA
Ella
Elsa
Lisa
Liz
Babette
He said that so fast I had to repeat the video 25 times. I think I've got it though but without the accent.it's usually shortened to Llanfair PG...by the locals ..and the full pronunciation is this..
