A lot of the military-industrial complex is there, so I suspect that quite a few cities are targeted specifically, for first-salvo strikes.

I would expect California, Texas, and New York to be attacked because that would mess up the economy and I think the whole nation would collapse without making the country a bad place to send the military invasion.

Those 4 states together get something like 85% of all domestic military spending.
 
This might odd, but while watching tv at night, and often looking out the window, I keep having visions of a bright light then nothing. I hope I'm not psychic...lol.

Yes, I rather be the first to go. At my age with this body, despite working out in the gym, I can barely walk 1/2 mile with my walker. Sleeping on the ground would be intolerable. I used to love the idea of living off the grid and doing a soft survivalist thing. Now doing a 30 by 40 vegetable garden is too difficult. I hate it but this old body is not doing a survivalist thing. :D But I have a lot of books if my family ever thinks they want information for survival without the benefits of civilization.

I know your concern. Several years ago I played with a future prediction program and what came up was not something we want to imagine.

Most of California will obviously be toast. One can see why if I had the time before things began nuking, I would drive to northern California redwood coastal areas well north of San Francisco Santa Rosa. Good salmon and steelhead rainbow trout habitat.
 
Good map. Honestly it's best to shelter in, well realistically you just need to accept the end run and hope it's quick. Sheltering in place sounds good but in the real world you will run out of food and liquids in short order. Unless you have a very large hidden stockpile you will eventually run out. Even if you own a vehicle to restock or relocate that is not disabled by EMP every road will be blocked by tens of thousands of disabled vehicles.

Sewage disposable will overwhelm you. Snow, rain or fog will not be a good thing. My youngest nephew is assigned to Kings Bay in Georgia. I used to ask him if any of the Ohios would head South after they launch their Tridents. He says to stop taking movies like On the Beach seriously. I never ask him about his assignments anymore but even I know they can't surface and go fishing so they will eventually run out of food and sailors will die. Take care and GOD Bless.
 
I am just posting Wikipedia info here for the time being until I can dredge out copies of documents I have posted in the military forum since the beginning of time. Those post won't be time stamped but catch as catch can and the forum policy is 5 videos per post so each post will contain 5 videos at most. I have never served in the military however a number of family and members here have and can probably post more accurate and detailed declassified information then I can. Take care. The key for those living in urban areas would be to drive out well before the possibility of WWIII became imminent. This senior is much more flexible versus those tied to working jobs with kids in schools etc so would leave my core urban area at a low threshold towards the north coast if the threat rose.

Once situations become serious with panic setting in, one can expect major freeways will quickly be blocked and those living in more rural areas will make sure their roads leading in will be blocked so massive hoards from urban areas don't inundate them and what store supplies they may have locally. Since the Internet will go down, only those with small scale paper or device digital maps and rural locals will be able to navigate more freely.

One can download this highly recommended 86 minute long 2010 documentary mpeg video, After Armageddon, from the following website that was a bit less than 400 megabytes, so took about 5 minutes to do so. If so, most people, especially in urban regions, will be unprepared and likely die in just a short few weeks. They will die from starvation, murder by desperate others, and criminal armed gangs, seeking food, guns and ammunition, water, gold, gasoline, and attractive women. So wise choice will be to leave early.

How old is this second map?

I know of some specific locations that would be prime targets, mainly because they hold bunkers designated for different segments of Federal leadership and the uber-rich or secondary command-and-control centers.
