What will we see next, Omega -19? So everyone that received the Vaccine will they have to get a new vax? I am not making light of it.. just trying to understand. I feel most of us are clueless... I know I am.

You are just as clueless as the "Experts."
You can be sure there will be other "Strains" for which more vaccines will be miraculously created in weeks.
And we will also hear "Cases are spiking dramatically" along with "many deaths" for each new vaccine.
Ooops - they just reported "Spiking Cases of Covid 19." That didn't take long.

the delta varient of the covid-19 virus is the fourth variant to be identified as in number 4,,,,, duh....

Viruses mutate when they replicate. Viruses don't just feed on the host's cells like bacteria do, they actually enter the cells and use the cell contents to replicate quickly in very large numbers. Then they leave that host to infect another. The faster the replication rate, the greater the chance that a mutant strain will grow in a community.

Pandemics occur when a novel virus hits a community that has no immunity at all. Various strains of the disease develop and compete with each other for hosts. The strains can be distinguished using DNA testing, something that was not possible in the past and for convenience they are referred to using letters of the Greek alphabet. Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon etc. Apparently there is now a lambda variant.

"The lambda variant was first identified in Peru in late 2020 but was only classified a variant of interest by the WHO in mid-June 2021. That’s because it has now spread to 29 countries and seems to be circulating pretty widely in South America.

In Peru, for example, lambda accounts for roughly 80% of all new infections that have been sequenced since this spring. It is also increasingly prevalent in Chile and Argentina, the WHO warned.

There is reason to be concerned about where lambda is spreading. South America has emerged as a COVID-19 hotspot, accounting for roughly a quarter of the global death toll from the virus. There are many factors likely contributing to South America’s current crisis, including low vaccination rates, crowded cities and the emergence of new variants like this one, The Wall Street Journal reported. "

like Warrigal says all viruses mutate all the time. Result is new variants and strains, all the time. Not just COVID, all viruses. That's part of the reason we get flu shots every year, to address the new variants of the flu. In the end I am sure COVID will be the same, and boosters or new vaccines will be necessary periodically. I think it may just end up as a part of the flu shot cocktail we get every fall. The vaccines are still effective against these variants, but a bit less effective, and that will continue to be true until we get boosters or new vaccines. No vaccine is ever 100% effective, some risk still exists, just much lower. Its how vaccines always work.

A big difference between COVID and the flu and other viruses is we are paying close attention and the new variants make for headline news. New variants of the common cold are more common but we pay them no attention.

The Delta variant came from India/Nepal, but too many
people were upset with the different variants named after
a country and attacking innocent people who looked like
they were from that country, so they changed from actual
names to Greek numbers, at least that is what happened here.

Mike.

The Lambda also know as C-37... got it's name from after 3 previous ''Variants of interest '' after Delta had come to the attention of scientists and the world, but their names weren't generally released to the public..they are..

.. and we're now hearing of Lambda because it's apparently as worrisome as the Delta Variant, or even potentially more potent..

Current vaccines are effective against the delta variant but is very transmissible.

It is causing concern in Scotland at the moment which currently has the highest infection rate in Europe.

According to the WHO, 1% of the population in Scotland has the delta variant of COVID-19 which means looking out of the window in every10 of the people I see is infected.

Pretty worrying.

If this virus continues to "mutate", and it probably will...we may see the "Omega" variant some day.

As rapidly as this virus appeared, and spread, there are still many unanswered questions. Presently, the Best, and probably Only thing people can do is remain cautious. Now, that the Summer activities are increasing, so are the numbers of infections/deaths.
