I must say the female players in the Spanish team have a good point. The male president kissing lots of them on the lips is unacceptable. Why does he think he can do that? Not everyone likes being touched at all.

I wouldn't stand for anyone kissing me like that except my husband.

So calling for this President to be fired is I think perfectly understandable.
What do you think?

agreed - even if it was done in a moment of excitement he should 1`. know better to beware in this day and age 2. No it's just not the right thing to do in his position - and why do it to only one and not more that seems suspicious to me?? still all quids down just not on full stop

I watched the clip and mistakenly thought he was doing it to several of the players - my mistake.
However, the principal still stands, he has no business kissing any woman or man. It is invasion of privacy.
I hate it myself, there are certain people I dread because although they are nice, they insist on touching, hugging, holding hands. Nobody I know kisses friends on the lips though - that is a preserve of closest intimacy surely.

He's not the President.. he's a Football FA chief... and he's Spanish, the Spanish do this... frozen in time it look like he smooched her but he didn't it was a very quick kiss...on the lips.......

Spanish FA chief admits kiss ‘somewhat tarnished’ Women’s World Cup win

Don't get me wrong... he probably shouldn't have done it.. but he ..and the Spanish ladies team, are very used to this type of spontaneous reaction.. the men do it to the men too and it only kicked off because the one female footballer said she didn't like it.....and the media ran with it..

If it made the female uncomfortable, and if she said it did then it did... the FA chief should apologise profusely.. and never do it again , but a 2 second kiss of congratulations ..shouldn't cost him his job...

Have to disagree with Holly here. Kissing on the cheek might be considered normal, but on the lips? No.

He clearly shouldn't have done it, imo. You've got to remember, these women are professionals, and as such are at their place of work. This guy has, effectively, stepped into their office and kissed them on the lips, something he wouldn't have done had they been male footballers.

He's been foolish. Quite how someone can hold a position of authority in 2023 and not know what is acceptable and what's not is beyond me. He'd of gotten away with this in 1970, but not now.

Agree here .

Believe me as someone who lived in Spain for many years, I can assure you like Italians, the Spanish are very tactile when they're excited especially in Sports.....good god people are talking like he held her down and smooched her.. he kissed her on the lips for one second.. patted her on the back.... in Congratulations... She's made such a fuss about it he's very unlikely to do it again..

Oh dear, two threads on the same subject, how confusing.
Oh dear, another flouncing Queen saga, woke is sure causing some upsets. Spanish female player lifts President off his feet in a minor peck on the lips, now it might end up in court.

The Spanish football federation says it will take legal action over Jenni Hermoso's comments about its president Luis Rubiales.

Rubiales has refused to resign after kissing forward Hermoso on the lips following Spain's Women's World Cup final win over England in Sydney.
Hermoso said on Friday she did not consent, but the federation has questioned her version of events.

"The evidence is conclusive," it said. "Mr President has not lied."

I totally accept that, Holly. On the other hand, that does not make this right. As I said, she was at her place of work, and on the world stage. It wasn't right, and he ought to have known better. As a leader, you'd expect him to be setting the standards for behavior, not falling below them.

I also don't know about people over-reacting. If it were my daughter, I'd not like it. And as I say, if it had been a male team, he'd not of done it. Women are striving for equality, and for me that extends into the realm of professionals. She's a professional, and there are better and more appropriate ways to celebrate a victory.

Did he commit a crime? No. But ethically, I question his judgement. How difficult is it to treat men and women in the same manner? He's also, in some ways, their boss, so there's a power mechanic going on. This is not great leadership. Should he lose his job? I don't have strong feelings about that, but a lot depends on how well he handles the criticism. If he handles it badly, that could well happen. Reform starts by drawing a line, and it's drawn here, I'm afraid.

Yep... he should know better!

Correct....

With all due respect... I have to disagree they certainly do kiss male sportsmen.. there's no distinction with Latinos when they're congratulating people.. weddings.. births, sports....

he's a Football Manager.. not a president... footballers have been doing this for decades...

Italians, Spanish, French, Midde Eastern are all very
demonstrative. Hugs, cheek kisses are the norm
not kisses on the lips.
This girl was captive in a sense... he held on to her
head with both hands... she could not move her head.
Get rid of him!

That's different Holly. No-one is claiming men don't kiss men in the excitement of their sport. But is that really comparable to someone not involved walking up and kissing a woman on the lips? Not for me. Unless there's some footage of him kissing a male winner on the lips - but even then I'd think he was wrong twice.

It's also worth remembering that a) Things change, and what was acceptable last week may not be today; b) This was at a World Cup, and was shown on the worlds stage. It was not only a Spanish game, the entire planet got to see it. Some things, culturally, don't translate. They can even be offensive. Again, as a leader, I'd of thought he'd of known better.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't much care about what is acceptable in his own world. The outcry has come, largely, from elsewhere. They're trying to grow women's sport, and especially women's football. To do so we need integrity, respect, and professionalism. We get that from the top down. I suspect he'll never do it again, if he manages to keep his job.

I'm reminded of an instance that is, in some ways, similar. I was with a company in London, and we were working on a deal for a piece of software. The software company was out of Utah, and they sent a rep over to meet us. She was a young woman, in her 20's I'd guess.

The meeting went on in a normal way, which meant at some point the owner of my business declared, "right, let's go to pub!" And so we did. This poor lady, from Utah with all that implies, was left in a real predicament I didn't appreciate until after the fact. I recall they bought her drinks, and her standing nervously caught in the trap of wanting to close the deal and bond with this client, while at the same time measuring up to her own cultural standards. I remember some mocking her - in that way men can have of using sarcasm/humor to insult - because she was drinking very slowly (ie. not at all).

Her behavior was the topic of some discussion the next day. Goodness knows how she coped. Those trips to the pub were long, and always ended up one way, filthy drunk. I've no idea what she went back and said to her colleagues!

Which is to say - culture clashes don't make things right. A little common sense (which was clearly missing on this day) should have prevailed, with respect to the wishes of the guest. That didn't happen, and it put her in a very uncomfortable situation.

Shock maybe? E. Jean Carroll said she laughed afterwards, from being shocked at what happened. I believe it to be a surprised reaction. Neither woman would have done to him what he actually deserved, women especially are not brought up that way.

If I recall correctly, she tried to brush it under the carpet afterwards with a social media post. Then the outrage continued, and some of her fellow players spoke out against it, and she reverted to the "I didn't give permission" statement. She's caught in the power dynamic of a superior within her professional life doing as they pleased.

Better yet - if the standard for behavior wasn't understood before, I think we're clear what it is now, which is how progress is made.

A hypothetical question. What would have been the international reaction if.........The President of the Spanish Football Association WAS A WOMAN, who kissed the female players on the lips ??? Would that have raised eye brows, or not ? I small a double standard here. JimB.

I see little progress, whatever the reputed progress is considered to be. The domain of a few raging women, feminists who hold other women to such a standard of both academic and emotional intellect that failure in that regard is sometimes treated as an unforgivable sin.

The main argument is one of consent. So it wouldn't matter what sex each of them are.

I have just read that the Spanish FA are now saying they're going to take legal against the player for "lying". I said earlier that a lot depends on how well, or not, this was handled. This, if you'll forgive the pun, is an own goal. The FA couldn't be making it worse. It boggles the mind how people with this much power simply fail to read the temperature of the room. Stunning.

Anyway, apparently they claim the player lifted the guy off the ground, and I guess by implication that this was consent?!? Wow. Madness ensues.

In terms of women's football they've made huge strides over the last few years. They won't reach parity with men any time soon, but the sport is certainly on the upswing, and with big numbers.

They will never reach parity with the men's game in my opinion, having compared the two games and the physical input. In fact I doubt any female team or player would get in any English Div. Entertaining, yes, but how soon before that wears off.
