Even in the Arctic , animals are suffering the effects of people littering...poor little bear...:(

A starving polar bear has been approaching homes in an Artic outpost for help after getting its tongue caught inside a tin can.

Extraordinary footage shows the wild animal pleading for human help in Dikson, northern Russia, as it has been unable to eat after getting its tongue lodged in an empty can of condensed milk.

The polar bear can be seen approaching one resident who had been standing on his porch.

The man can be seen trying to remove the sharp-edged can from the polar bear's mouth, but can only get so far as the animal's tongue is wedged too deeply inside the can.

I hope this poor bear can be tranquilized, and that tin removed. It will surely die of starvation

Polar Bears are already on the endangered list. A loss of the bears wouldn’t necessarily be a major loss, but anytime we lose animals to extinction, it’s a loss for humanity. I know our trust donates to one of the wildlife conservation funds. Elephants and Tigers are also nearing endangerment.

yes I agree, but it's the thought that poor bear is in such pain it over-rode it's fear of humans to approach for help.. and is now starving to death painfully because of US humans being so cavalier with our attitude .. so selfish that we care not for the lives of other species by our thoughtless actions

I hope that people are instructed to open their food tins completely/removing both ends and flattening the tin to prevent this from happening again.

I would think that there should be some type of game management in that area that could or would take care of the bear. A few years back, my wife and I came upon a crow that had its head stuck in a cookie bag. The bird was probably trying to get the crumbs out and then couldn’t gets it’s head out. He didn’t try to fly, but did run. I crept up to the bird and grabbed the bag just as it took off running and the bag came loose. It felt like it was on kind of tight. I don’t know if he would have been able to get its head out or not. That was one lucky bird. Very few people would help a crow.

In the video, it appears that the person attempting to remove the can just needed to push the lid down and the can should have came right off.

Oldman , read the link I posted, the rescuers are struggling to be able to save the bear in time,...

I did read it, but missed that part. The article is a bit choppy. I don’t understand why they don’t tranquilize the bear, or just push the lid down. That may cut its tongue, but it’s better than starving and the tongue will heal.

Me too. From what I read they gathered a lot of fish for him to eat after they got the can off him. It would have been nice if they could take him to a place to recover until he was strong enough to be own his own again. But with the weather conditions there, they may not have been an option.

I see in the comment section they got the tin can off.

Latest news, the tin has been removed. :)

They did ?!!! Hope this is true.

I hope his tongue was not to badly injured ?

I agree with Pinky, in that extra care needs to be taken with cans and whatever else in that situation.

We [people] have encroached on animal habitat all over the world ....... I don't think a little extra effort for them is too much to ask.

Russian environmental watchdog chief Svetlana Radionova said today: 'The polar bear was found some 1.9 miles from Dikson airport.

'Vets managed to sedate her with the first shot, and removed the tin can. Now one of the vets is treating multiple cuts on the bear's tongue.

'The bear is a young female, weighing between 80 and 90kg.

'It will be monitored for several days, and then returned to its natural habitat with a stack of fish.'

The plan is to move the polar bear away from the settlement.

A team of vets arrived at the remote village after a 2,125 mile air and road journey plagued by bad weather and managed to sedate the female polar bear and remove the tin can.
