Step Outside in This City, Get Recorded Everywhere

I can see why the ACLU is uneasy about this. There are just so many ways this could get out of hand. Someone could tap into the system to stalk another, or corrupt police start blackmailing wealthy persons, having affairs. Who knows what crafty people could do with the feed from those cameras. On the other hand, once you step outside your door, you are fair game. Police are relying on closed circuit TV to solve a lot of crime.

Years ago Jesse Ventura had an episode on his show Conspiracy Theories about video surveillance. Cameras were being installed in a town in which he shot one segment of the piece and it was not a town that had much crime. He pointed out that the installation of video cameras across America would impact citizens' privacy. Big Brother is watching and more and more technology has been put in place for that purpose.

I don’t know how much anyone has been following what’s going on in Baltimore, but they are having some real issues considering the size of their city. A lot of murders, corrupt police department and also some city officials.

I occasionally will go into Baltimore on business, but I am always very aware of my surroundings. It’s turned into a very dangerous city. In fact, every student at Johns Hopkins University receives a pamphlet explaining how to be safe in Baltimore.

Maybe this is a way of keeping an eye out for dangerous situations or to catch criminals in action.

Surveillance cameras don't bother me (except for the ones that result in my getting a ticket for driving one mile over the speed limit). ;)

But in general, I suppose public space is public space. We don't really have a right to "privacy" when we are outside. I think the ACLU is off base with this. Stalkers? Corrupt police? Blackmail? All of those things are possible without using cameras. People have been "observing" each other for centuries. Isn't that what private detectives are hired to do? And police detectives also?

I can't stop any public filming, but I sure don't help the tracking. I keep the location feature turned off on my telephone and only turn it on when I need it.

My web browsers also have the location features turned off. Yeah, they know roughly where I am from my IP address, but not specifically. Websites usually guess my location to be several towns over. Fine by me.

Oldman, my husband and I used to travel to Baltimore frequently because one of his son's was there and seemed to like the street life and homelessness better than being sheltered (until he decided to stay with a girlfriend). We'd go to Baltimore to track him down and just see how he was doing plus my husband bought oils from a wholesaler there. One Christmas season my husband went without me. He called me and while we were on the phone I heard Pop-pop-pop-pop very clearly. I said please tell me that is not gun shots. He said that it was gun shots, apparently in close proximity to where he was. I have an online friend who sold real estate there and has since moved. She told us how dangerous the city has gotten. When I see stories listing cities with the highest crime and murder rates, I know Baltimore will be high on the list.

You are so right!

The statement I will never forget after 911 is "We are changed forever." I have to shake my head when I hear people say they will never give up their right to privacy. I respond simply, "you already did, you just don't know it."
