IMO (and wife's)there's absolutely nothing wrong with these holidays, but I wouldn't considerHalloween a holiday........just a "fun" day/night. During the years Iwas single, I didn't celebrate any holiday. I was involved in Square Dancingand the club I was in would have a Halloween Party and it was cool to see thefolks dressed up, but I didn't. The holidays were a day off/paid for me andthat was fine. After I met my wife, I found out just how much she was intodecorating (inside/outside) for Halloween, Easter and Christmas. Nextthing I knew, I got into as well. My wife's mom had a Halloween costume, andattended the party at her Club House, up until the year she passed (age89). She was the Statue of Liberty.
In 2003 (I was 54 and she was 55), I found an adult size Bat Man costume(in original packaging) by a trash bin in our apt. complex. Tried it onand it fit perfectly. Wife decided to be Cat Woman and both made and bought hercostume stuff. Went to a nightclub for a party. Only thing was, BatMan didn't have a mustache and I did.........oh well. LOL
Last year (2013, I was 64 and she was 65), I wanted to be Darth Vader (I'm a HUGEStar Wars fan). Wife decided to be Princess Leia. We bought bothcostume, done some "improvements" on each and went to twoparties. It was so, so great!!
This year (2014) we are dressing up again as Darth Vader and PrincessLeia. Right now, working on improving thecostumes "looks" even more.
Anyway, for a couple of years, we had a bowl by our front door and onlygot a couple of "trick or treat" kids. Last year and this yearwe will be gone, so no candy given out.
Some folks don't get into "holidays" while others, like ourselves, can go all-out and really enjoy it.
As far as what stores do, doesn't really bother me b/c I know it will happenand there's nothing I can do about it. I do complain about some things inlife, but stores selling candy/décor way before the"day" isn't one of them.
