Stimulus Money - What are you going to do with it?

I have this wild, impractical idea to hire someone to restore my little waterfall - It took me 3 years to build it by hand out of huge sandstone blocks that I dug up from the back of my yard (had to dig 3 1/2 ' to get them and drag them one by one) and get it 'perfect' and I got to see it run just one time last spring before the neighbor's tree fell on it and broke it apart. This year, my body isn't up to pulling it apart, chiseling away the mortar, and rebuilding it. So - since I'm in shut-down mode, I may just go a little crazy and see if I can get someone to come out and restore my little sanctuary.

Mine will be banked and used for everyday personal expenses as they arise.

That's what I have always done - the sensible thing. But, since this was an unexpected bonus - and because I have been feeling down, I think a bit of self-indulgence might just be okay. I may regret this in a year!

We are in the process of giving ours away. So far I have sent a check to the Salvation Army in NYC, a check to the local Salvation Army, and a check to a local food bank. The wife is sending a check to a friend of ours who has been laid off and a couple of other charities. Future checks will go to more food banks and the SPCA. I am also waiting to see if my Grandchildren get laid off.

We don't really regard this money as ours, our duty is to get it to people who are hurting, and I know that sounds a bit weird. But we have enough and are able to ride this crisis out without much pain. I expect to dip into our own money in this little crusade, because we sure are not shopping or traveling these days.

If money hangs around too long does it get "moldy?" I once worked for an old independently wealthy Master Chief who always made that claim each time before he started handing me "party money" for the electronics shop in Pearl Harbor. He was a model of generosity and worthy of copying.

I am compelled to stimulate our economy so I'm buying a faster laptop.

I've already sent financial help to the Philippines when the volcano erupted in January and now, they're under Martial law to implement strict community quarantine due to COVID-19 pandemic. Over there, there is no welfare system for the poor.

WoW...no welfare system at all for the poor?.... how do the poor of the philipines eat?

It's basically sink or swim over there. When I was an intern years ago, we would did medical missions to the poorest of the poor areas. Most families would have a "feast" with one pack of ramen soup divided among seven kids. Problem of drug use is rampant due to poverty. 'Nuff said...for now

Get my car fixed. Have an eye exam. Maybe buy some socks.
I had to laugh - The last thing that I bought before the shutdown was socks (my holiday present to myself); the thing that I procrastinated about doing and didn't get done before the shutdown was an eye exam (haven't had one in a decade); and my 16 year old car is no doubt dead since it hasn't been started since January! Wow - parallel lives!

Many of us need the money, many of us don't.
It is a sad situation where the money does not go to those
in desperation.
There are millions of people living paycheck-to-paycheck, as I did for years.
A 'blanket' freebie is a failure of our bureaucrats, but should not come as a surprise.
America's solution to problems is to throw money at it, with
little discrimination on where the money actually goes.

Sad, but true. But they never before threw it to me! Heard something (and I hope I heard wrong) that they were going to give people on unemployment a $600 a week additional - That's more than I made in a month working 35 hours a week, until my job ended in December (and I didn't qualify for unemployment). Since then, I'm trying to live on $600 a month Social Security retirement. Good thing that I live a simple life!

I LOVE the waterfall in my pond, it is a little oasis for sure. If I lived closer I would come and freely rebuild yours as a friend.
I love the amount of wildlife the pond brings into the backyard.

The inequality of our welfare system is a disgrace.
The governor of TX. turned down emergency funding available for SSI and SS recipient's.
Thanks Mr. Abbot.

He also wants to reopen the Tx economy by opening stores
and returning to work those people that are sheltering in place.

Has he not read what happened in 1918, when after 12 weeks of sheltering in place? When the population returned to normal: the Spanish flu returned with a vengeance

Hasn't hit my bank account yet.....when it does, gonna order a window air conditioner for my bedroom cuz the central house automated one doesnt always work....the heat and humidity just about kills me in the summertime, which will be here soon by us.....I literally cant breath.
Gonna order a new mouse for the laptop also and groceries online of course....I live on a very small SS income too.....

That is incredibly sweet! Thank you so much for the thought! Somewhere, I have/had a picture of a very large hawk bathing in it from prior summer - what a thrill! Can you post a picture of your waterfall? I'd love to see it!

I love the Salvation Army, if it weren’t for them I would have been homeless at 17.

I don't have a current photo on my phone or this laptop (It crashed in Jan and I lost all the pictures), so here is one from a couple years ago. The fence is now total hidden with wisteria. I don't want to derail this thread, so i'll start a conversation with you. I've had minks, raccoons, hawks, herons and an owl want to eat the fish. (But that's another thread) :)

How do you live on so little, if I had to live on my 800 a month I couldn’t do it. Husband gets social security and he still has to work.

Hey, thanks for reminding me that maybe it's time I re-built the little water feature I had built for my wife. Sadly, the renters we had for a while destroyed it. But, hey, it'll give me something to do with all those rocks that grow out of the field all the time. :ROFLMAO:
