If the checkout person misses something in your cart (or you do by accident) and you notice it later, do you go back and pay for it?

Yep - I know what it's like to try to keep a business going, and it just isn't in my nature to try to rip people off.

... unless they deserve it ...

I have done that before, got clear out to my car, and then realized that underneath my black purse, was an almost black eggplant that I had missed when I emptied out the groceries at checkout. So, I took it back in and paid for it. Now, I make sure that i pick up my purse, check to see that the whole cart is empty before paying for my groceries.
One time, I paid for everything with a check, and when I got to the feed store to get my horse and dog food, there was the check for Safeway, still in the checkbook !
Thankfully, Safeway was not that far away for me to go back, show them my receipt, and give them the check.

However, I also always check my cash register receipt to make sure that I have not overpaid for anything, and if I find a mistake, I am right there in the customer service line to get it fixed, and get my money back; so it goes both ways.

When I was working as a bouncer I would often get home only to find a stripper in my pocket. Very embarrassing. I always had to return her the next day.

You would have thought that they would put those anti-shoplifting tags on them, so if you walked out the door with one the alarm would go off, but they never did. I guess they just trusted their customers.

And of course the cashier would always look at me funny when I DID bring them back, like "WHY are you returning this?" Then she'd call her manager and the manager would ask if I wanted a refund or just an equal exchange, and I had to spend 15 minutes explaining that I hadn't really purchased her in the first place, I just found her in my pocket, but they never seemed to be able to understand that ...

I'm honest. I pay when there's a mistake. I just don't feel good if my 'good fortune' comes at the expense of others.

I usually check to make sure everything's out of the cart, and if I have something on the lower section, I make sure they scan it. Don't want to be accused of stealing anything as I'm exiting the store.

I most certainly do, I have found missed items on several occasions and always go back and pay for them, I wouldn't dream of doing otherwise.

Yes always.. as Ina says the cashier has to pay if the till is out and I was a cashier for a few years in a grocery chain and
I know what its like to make the till up when its out.. not happened much but it does happen and also if something is taken out
of the store well the store has to make up the amount.. "so Honesty is the best policy.. "
