Stores running out of change

This was mentioned in another thread here, and rather than hijack, I am starting a new thread. I have been hearing and reading about change shortages, they say due to Covid. I am wondering why? This article mentions convenience stores Change shortage but my grocery store is now asking for exact change only of paying cash.
I am not sure I fully understand. Is the federal gov't not making as much? Not Covid related, but I often wonder about people who have jars and buckets of saved up pocket change at home, which they have been collecting for years. So, why not a shortage before?
Here in the US, we have the coin machines in stores, where you can turn in change, and get a slip to turn in at the register. But the machines charge a fee, unless you opt for a gift card. Very few banks take unrolled (or rolled) change any more. Some banks have the coin machines. But you have to be a customer to not be charged a fee,
Maybe banks need to start taking in coins. Rolled or otherwise. To build up the supply.
Or are there ore reasons for the shortage?

Funny you mentioned that Marie. I haven't been out doing much shopping, but I did go to the supermarket today and noticed a sign by the register that there was a change shortage, asking if people could round out their bill to next dollar instead of asking for change. I usually pay with a check, so that's not an issue.

First I heard of this was today at the market when the cashier said, "If you're paying cash, we'll round off to the next dollar."

I've been in a number of stores where signs are posted asking cash customers to pay with the smallest possible bill. This runs contrary to banks where with cash withdrawals, they want to give you mostly large bills. Try to pass a large bill, and stores will hold it up to the light to ensure it's not counterfeit, giving you an uncomfortable feeling as you wait to pass inspection. Maybe I just look shifty...

Coins, especially the smallest ones, I regard as nuisance money that weighs down the pockets and pocketbooks and is useful basically to make small transactions come out evenly so you're not blessed with more coins!

I hadn't noticed it at all. I paid for my groceries at the store the other day and they gave me my change.

My boyfriend asked about it at the little store near his house and the store owner said he usually gets $500. in change for the week and when he went to his bank they would only give him $30. The bank told him because of the quarantine and the banks not being open like normal, people were not bringing in coins to be cashed in like usual. And all those little businesses where people (including teenagers), where people pay for small purchases in cash were closed for so long. So none of those coins were circulating.

Theres no money shortage. They are very afraid of touching money, silly. Chances of getting infected are almost none touching cash. They can give their money to me. I'm not afraid to touch it

Also stores make no money with change. Its a courtesy only that is fading. Even small stores, even if you buy something. No friendly gestures. Another reason is that many stores do not trust their workers to take from the till. They will never admit it. Some might fear a holdup.

I can't recall where I read it but it said the government is producing less change.

The fear of not touching cash doesn't seem to be entirely it:
first, the one store a neighbor told me no longer accepts cash is the only store I go to where the cashiers run the customers' debit cards.
second, the grocery store I mentioned that said they couldn't give me quarters didn't object to giving me dollar bills twice.

At Walmart my boyfriend usually gets cash from his debit account when he pays for his purchases. Just did it the other day. My son, who is disabled and does not use any debit cards uses cash only. No problem here with paying with cash yet. Not saying it won't happen but for now we are okay. I am not sure how I will handle my son's purchases after that.

When ya think about it, we really no longer need change. Vending machines take paper bills, and many are now taking credit cards / debit cards. What can we buy for a nickle ? a dime ? even a quarter ?........nothing.

If the retailers adjust all their prices rounding [up] ....... face it they won't round down :( Then [those of us that use cash] won't have jugs of change in the closet. And the credit/debit cards folks won't even notice the ........... change.

Nothing will be $11.99 ......... it'll be twelve bucks .

A cashless society means no cash.... Zero!!! It doesn’t mean mostly cashless and you can still use a ‘wee bit of cash here & there’. Cashless means fully digital, fully traceable, fully controlled. I think those who support a cashless society aren’t fully aware of what they are asking for. A cashless society means:

* Your child can’t go & help the local farmer to earn a bit of cash.
* No more cash slipped into the hands of a child from their grandparent when going on holidays.
* No more money in birthday cards.
* No more piggy banks for your child to collect pocket money & to learn about the value of earning.
* No more cash for a rainy day fund or for that something special you have been putting $10 a week away for.
* No more selling bits & pieces from your home that you no longer want/need for a bit of cash in return.
* No more cash gifts from relatives or loved ones.

What a cashless society does guarantee:
* Banks have full control of every single cent you own.
* Every transaction you make is recorded.
* All your movements & actions are traceable.
* Access to your money can be blocked at the click of a button when/if banks need ‘clarification’ from you which could take weeks, a hundred questions answered & five hundred passwords.
* If your transactions are deemed in any way questionable, by those who create the questions, your money will be frozen, ‘for your own good’.
And before anybody slams this post ... don’t go shooting the messenger .. I’m sharing it because maybe we all need to take off our blinkers. Forget about cash being dirty. Cash has been around for a very, very long time & it gives you control over how you trade with the world. It gives you independence.
If you are a customer, pay with cash. If you are a shop owner, remove those ridiculous signs that ask people to pay by card. Cash is a legal tender, it is our right to pay with cash. Banks are making it increasingly difficult to lodge cash & that has nothing to do with a virus.
Please stop believing everything you hear on the TV. Almost every single topic in today’s world is tainted with corruption & hidden agendas. Politics & greed is what is wrong with the world; not those who are trying to alert you to the reality.
Please pay with cash & please say NO to a cashless society while you still have a choice.

I never said anything about cash .... other than {I} usually use it.

I said change , as in hard coin currency.

Just saw this interesting article. Will pennies survive coin shortage? There have been talk for a while to eliminate them from our currency. They are kind of useless, as it costs more to mint them than they are worth.
Canadian friends...haven't you already cancelled the penny? If so, are the old ones still in circulation?
