Strength Declining With Age

According to this NYT article, muscle growth is a distinct possibility as you get older.

As for Angelo, he started his "physical culture" routine at a very young age; I think that has a lot to do with it.

Of course, he was Italian-American, and everyone knows they're naturally strong!

I played baseball in college and was drafted way down the list by the LA Dodgers in like the 28th round or somewhere around there. I decided not to report to camp and to get on with my life. I knew that I was never going to make the big leagues, so why waste the years? I was a catcher and everyone told me that I had a bazooka for an arm throwing the ball down to second. In college, I had a 97% throw-out rate of runners attempting to steal. Today, I can barely get the ball down to second, so I would definitely agree that age does decrease strength and performance. I still jog twice or three times a week, but so what? Two miles is no big deal and most anyone up to the age of 80 should be able to do that, unless, of course, they have some debilitating illness or they smoke.

Time to get a Gilhoolie to help with those jar lids.

This is an official one.

This is the smaller version that I use.

Both versions are available at the Vermont Country Store.

I recommend a gilhoolie jar opener too. I've also got a knock off that works very well. I don't need it that often, but when I do, I DO!

For difficult *metal* jar lids, I always turn the jar upside down and hold it over an (electric) stove burner until the metal heats up. Put a towel around the lid to unscrew it.

We use a special piece of cloth, available at stores, treated with a super grip coating, which you use on the stiff lid by exerting as much torque as you can, and because it doesn't slip, the lid breaks loose!

(Of course, you can't have a limp wrist and expect it will work.)

My strength has declined as I get older but what disturbs me more is my endurance seems to be declining more rapidly. Activities that I use to enjoy before with little effort such as playing 18 holes of golf now tire me out. I find myself needing to take a nap sometime in the afternoon if I am at home.
