Substitute teachers…your experiences!

Most of us probably had a substitute teacher at some point during our school careers. When you had one, did your class act out? Try to fool or mislead the sub? Give them a hard time? Or was having a “sub” a novel and good thing? What were your most memorable experiences with substrate teachers?

i never remember many acting out and most did not take the job seriously IMO
as it seemed like babysitting rather then follow where we were in a lesson etc. I never understood that as many teachers left instructions if possible as to what we were working on etc.

Dependent on the “sub” and the teacher that they were replacing, the experience could be drudgery, or a breath of fresh air. Some subs operate in almost robotic mode; e.g., “Mr. Smith wants you to read Chapter 12, and write out answers to the questions at the end of it.”

Other subs gave a more dynamic lesson, injected humor, and could be better than the person that they were replacing. I remember one in elementary school that even shook my little world view by making me realize that I was, in fact, an animal! 🙀

In many school districts today though, teachers are required to leave such lengthy and detailed lesson plans for a substitute that they chose to work sick unless deathly ill…

Substitute teachers…your experiences!

It was always a good experience
They didn't really know what we were supposed to be doing
We didn't really care what they were supposed to be doing

But, yeah
a breath of fresh air
Got to try new things on new teachers

We ran several regular teachers off
So, we were well versed in experimental application on subs
(break 'em in right)

When I was in early grade school there was one substitute that was beloved by all the students. When the first day of school came around for 5th grade my class was delighted to learn she was now going to be our full time teacher. It was a great year.

I think it was 8th grade and there was a sub, I think may have been on her very first assignment. I had never witnessed a teacher lose such control of a class before that, or since. There were kids on all fours crawling around the floor barking like dogs, things being thrown about, and a noise level that made normal level conversation impossible. We never saw her again.

About the worst thing I did when there was a sub was talk to the other kids, just like everyone else was doing.

Nothing spectacular. The rare times we had subs it was either one of two retired teachers, or the wife of one of them.
All that stood out was one day when a retired teacher subbed, and he lived near some of the students, we learned a classmate's real name was not Buddy- as that's what he was called all throughout school we assumed it was his real name. Turned out he was Eugene, Jr., named after his dad.

We had a substitute in gradeschool named (I kid you not) Mrs. Cankerworm. She looked like Ms. Marple but not as canny. Bless her, she was behind the eightball right off the bat with a name like that =(
