and often they get away with a slight slap from the justice system.

Last year when we were living with a heat dome and BC was burning up and communities were destroyed, this fellow was stopped by some people in the neighbourhood.

I just looked up his sentence given a year later. 233 days of conditional sentence and 3 years probation. Other charges were stayed. He had been in custody for 11 months prior to the sentencing.

Vigilante justice can become extremely dangerous. It is often illegal, and sometimes it leads to criminal charges fr the vigilante. Shooting a criminal, or restraining them seems to be an act of bravery and heroism, but when amateurs start arresting other citizens we are in for big trouble. It will become the wild wild west....remember all the unjust hangings in our past. IMHO

What they did in no legal way could be described as vigilante justice. Beating him, etc., would be.

Vigilante justice is in no way an issue here, so I don't understand why the reference to it. They detained him while waiting for the authorities, that is all.

I could not find any specific reference to restraint of liberty, just the arrest statute:

133.225 Arrest by private person. (1) A private person may arrest another person for any crime committed in the presence of the private person if the private person has probable cause to believe the arrested person committed the crime. A private person making such an arrest shall, without unnecessary delay, take the arrested person before a magistrate or deliver the arrested person to a peace officer.

(2) In order to make the arrest a private person may use physical force as is justifiable under ORS 161.255.

Assuming it was not a technical arrest, common law everywhere permits a person to halt the commission of a major felony to protect property and life.
