Syrian refugees being welcomed to Scotland

I mentioned this in the middle of another thread.

The winter’s first hailstorm and iced rain cocktail greeted visitors disembarking from the Gourock to Rothesay ferry on Friday morning. In the next week or so, 15 Syrian refugee families, fleeing bombs and bullets in their homeland, will make the same crossing, seeking security, compassion and the Arabic for winter woollies.

The families, including up to 50 children, are among a first large group of refugees who will begin arriving in Scotland this week. More than a thousand are expected initially and they will be dispersed throughout west central Scotland. Most of the scrutiny, though, will fall on the little batch of families who will soon be making their homes at the foot of the Argyll peninsula. The west of Scotland is not unaccustomed to taking in refugees and asylum seekers but never has a small island community hosted them.

This is about 20 miles from my home, and I've posted photos here of our bike rides on the island. I'm interested to see how the refugees adjust to life here, especially the climate.

Can you imagine what a culture shock it will be for those families who've scratched and scrabbled to merely survive, to come to a country that isn't at war? Will they be unnerved by the peace? Good luck to all you Scots and to your new citizens!

I'm hoping the USA helps... The Democratic party is advocating to taking 65,000... I heard yesterday that this is really a small amount given the size of our population... and it likened to making room for 3 or 4 more people in a football stadium holding 32,000. that puts it in better perspective.

It will be a huge culture shock. Language and accent challenges for sure!

The UK has promised to take 1,000 the first year and 20,000 total over 5 years I think. But Scottish parliament offered to take 400 of the 1,000 this year.

The USA unfortunately is presently gripped by Isalmophobia... particularly the Right wing... and that is being propagandized by talk radio and the presidential candidates... so I fear that any attempt to help will be blocked.

Islamophobia and anti-immigration is here as well, but I get the distinct impression it is much stronger in the US.

Not exactly true. Some of the liberals are also concerned and bring up the topic that we already have thousands illegally living in the US that should be somehow screened and admitted in some legal way. Additions will only increase this mess of unregistered folks in the US and are wanting that all the newer immigrants be pre screened before being allowed into the US.

Well.. we are smack dab in the middle of the election cycle... and ONE political party plays on the fears of the under informed voter to stir up fear and hatred in order to gain votes as it appears that that is the only way they can get elected.... I mean.. other than rigging the voter registration laws.

Not to mention the biased and twisted fears that perhaps SOMEONE will get something for nothing... and God forbid anyone should be given anything that everyone else doesn't get.... especially if it comes from tax dollars.... OMG!!! /\ /\ /\

Ah yes QS. Dragon syndrome. Can't you just see all those zillionaire lizards slithered up on their piles of treasure, terrified that someone could storm their compound and steal a shiny bauble that might prevent them from being the richest in the land, cause we all know that only the righteous prosper, and the peasants, illegal or not are REVOLTING?

I'm glad they're being accepted Ameriscot, and I hope Scotland and the refugees make the best of it and thrive. The US should also welcome as many as possible and give these folks a chance at a good life.

15 miles from where I live......

THREE Hundred Colchester residents marched in solidarity today to welcome refugees.
The march saw the team walk from The Mercury Theatre at Balkerne Gate to the Bandstand in Castle Park.

Councillors, Church leaders and teachers all came together for the cause.
The march is to welcome five Syrian families that will move to Colchester by this Christmas.

And in last nights Democrat debate it was brought up and the concern was posted that we need stronger screening and it should happen before letting these folks into the US.

The tax system needs redesigned. Agreed and have been trying to get that done but blocked by the liberals in government. The financial system needs redesigned. Agreed and I have noted that it was the liberals that caused this financial problem, Dodd and Franks had the job of overseeing the financial area to avoid criminal actions or illegal things. They did not report any and the market fell apart. Now we have Dodd Franks bill that is stifling the financial market. Yes we do need to fix the financial market.

Higher wages and benefits being demanded.

The job market needs support to get the jobs back into the US rather than overseas. The jobs went overseas because we can't lower our prices as we pay so much more than the overseas competitors do. Lots of benefits too not given in some of the competitors areas. We do need to figure out how to get our industries back into the states somehow. Redo the tax system would be a big help. Why should businesses be taxed more than overseas? Why should earnings be allowed to hide out overseas? Our present tax system is unfair as it allows big money folks like millionaires and billionaires to not be taxed for earnings with all the allowed ways to avoid taxes.

It is not the nasty conservatives that block the fixing of many of our government problems at all. That is just a lame excuse for hiding from something the current government has known about all along but did not find time to try to fix.

I sure hope the U.S. screens these refuges 100% before allowing them to set foot in this country....Nowadays its nerve-wracking just thinking about who's in those newcomers.
"here we come"...

Frankly, I think I would be far more worried about the homegrown, gun toting wackos that keep massacreing kids and college students. I sure do agree with you about stupidity though, just don't think it is about wearing a burqa. "Here we come?" seems like "they" are already there.

Agree. People are dying in the US nearly weekly by mass murderers.

I believe this was brought up in last nights debate. Not sure if it was Hillary or one of the others. They did want our laws changed so the medical records and such could legally be released so the gun registration folks could see them and legally stop registering guns to mental types of patients.

I think most in the US would agree with those changes as they have been asked for before but not acted on.
