Taking supplements

And for that matter medicines.

How many do you take , that you can honestly say you feel the difference ? A change ?

OK,OK ... I know the effects of B/P meds taken can be seen, cholesterol meds changes can also be seen [on a blood test report] But even those aren't felt , are they? While true low B/P can be felt .... higher B/P ? Not that I know of.

Pain Meds, yeah OK. I'm just wondering as I take some meds, and was taking several supplements [vitimins & minerals] I stopped taking the supplements [just because the number was so much] and i do not feel one bit different.

I went through a peripheral neuropathy therapy treatment from April till late June ... [more on that later]. They precribed three new supplements [OTC] , and again .... I feel no difference taking them , they're about to run out & I doubt I'll by more.

So I just thought I'd ask others about their experiences.

I've taken a daily multivitamin for years, in case I don't eat right. A few years ago, my eye doctor recommended a daily Lutein pill and a fish oil capsule...to help stave off Macular Degeneration...which my old Dad had. So far, the eyes are holding up. Then, as hip arthritis began, I added a daily Glucosamine/Chondroitin pill to the routine. Those 4 daily supplements have kept me off prescription drugs, and/or surgery....for a few cents a day.

I'm 76 now and take nothing. I will only take a medication or a supplement if I can feel the difference such as for pain or a very serious condition. Right now the problems I have with my legs aching I control with a heating pad. Doesn't cure but feels so good at the end of the day.
At my age its all about comfort and controlling as many problems I can on my terms and staying out of the doctors office.

I take my husbands Ambien for sleeping now and then and I suppose I could even do without that if I didn't read until the wee hours of the morning.

I take B12, D3, iron supplement, baby aspirin, and have a script for Ambien.

Yes, I do feel better when I take D3, discovered that decades ago.

The Ambien usually works and getting sleep is all it's cracked up to be. I feel better not being sleep deprived.

The B12 is because I eat a vegan diet. The aspirin, mostly to make my doctor happy--I have had a heart attack and subsequent bypass x3. Can't say I notice any difference how I feel.

I have a history of being borderline anemic, and in the past have had a full blood work up--nothing is wrong with me, just the way I am, even when I ate a regular diet.

When I first had to wear a mask, I noticed I would get tired and decided to experiment with iron supplementation-- only taking the RDA amount daily. In the past I've worn dust masks literally for hours on end and had no problems Having only to wear a mask for a few hours at a time, it did seem to help. My blood work showed I was in the slightly above anemic area--which is my sweet spot. My doctor told me to continue what I'm doing.

A good friend is a retired nurse who volunteered for Red Cross blood draws...when they got someone that showed low blood count issues/anemia they told them to eat raisins for a while and come back in. Worked every time I guess.

I only take prescription medicines but no supplements. I eat a variety of foods, so hopefully I'm covering all the nutrition bases. I think if I was lacking something, blood tests would indicate that. Normally I feel good unless I overexercise which is what I am experiencing now from cutting grass 2 days ago. When will I smarten up?

I take two supplements, several prescription medications, and two injectibles.

The prescriptions and injectibles all deal with diabetes, BP, and cholesterol.

The supplements are a multivitamin/mineral and a vitamin formulated specifically for my eyes.

I don't really know what good/harm they do.

It amazes me with diabetes specifically and probably many other diseases how many different drugs or different combinations of drugs are used.

Sometimes I do wonder if the drugs prescribed for me are the best for my situation or if a different combination might provide better results. 🤷‍♀️

Hot weather PLUS outside activities and I lose potassium so take supplement and yes, I can definitely feel the difference. I know it's best to get your potassium from foods but in summer, I simply don't.

However, must be careful as either too much OR too little can be deadly. Extreme fatigue that comes on suddenly or erratic heartbeat is the warning for me that it is too low.

It's great those things are working so well for you Don. Glucosamine and Chondroitin was recommended years ago when I was having trouble with my knee. Seemed to me the supplement made it worse, then I found out it was contraindicated due to one of the medicines I was taking so I gave it away. I've been taking Lutein for years and in spite of my various eye issues, my eye health seems to have been stabilized. I'm also taking zinc, biotin and potassium is a must.

I only take what my Dr. tells me to take. I was taking some & they were interfering with other meds he gave me... Now I take two Ocuvite chewable gummies for my Macular Degeneration that I get a shot in the eye every 6 weeks now for 7 years.

Also, COQ-10 for my joints & leg cramps that my P.C. Dr told me to get. Just a couple of weeks ago I saw my kidney Dr. because I have stage 3 CKD. He said everything was looking good but I need to drink 4 Oz. of Pomegranate juice every day. He said that was good for the heart & kidneys,

Right after that, I had Appt. with my heart Dr same day. I told him about the Pomegranate juice. He said oh yes that is very good for your heart & also muscles & other organs in your body.

So I only take what my Dr's. tell me is good for me. I don't experiment with any of the others.

I take supplements and I drink quite a bit of herbal tea. I feel a *difference* when I run out of my Vit-B12 & B6 supplement; I feel tired and my body feels heavy. I'm more achy when I don't take magnesium.

But the biggest differences is not how I feel, it's what my blood tests show. Without supplements, good cholesterol drops a bit, glucose goes up, and a few other markers go a little too high or too low. I probably do feel different when the levels are off, I just don't really notice it. But my body works more efficiently, I assume.

Not knowing quantity of raisins recommended, nor what tests specifically were done, or when, all I can say is in my case it didn't make any difference.

When grapes aren't in season I go through a 24 oz bag of raisins in about 7-10 days. When grapes are in season I go through 10-12 lbs per week. This is just my normal consumption and is in addition to and not in lieu of other food. I did try targeting and increasing my consumption of iron rich foods, before doing the supplements. Since I get my blood drawn every 6 months I can and do experiment with my diet to see what happens.

Iv'e always believed that in most cases, if you eat a healthy, balanced diet, you don't need supplements. If you have a medical condition that requires taking meds or supplements, the doc should prescribe them. However, if you take them and you feel they do you good - fine. Maybe it's a placebo effect, but I think that in many cases, the people who benefit most are the manufacturers.

Doc did give me a cholesterol med but I seldom take it, supposed to be just a prevention and what she does not know won't hurt her.

I do take Lutein because the thought of having something go wrong with my eyes terrifies me and B12 as I am not a huge meat eater. That's it.

People mock me because I put raisins in my cereal saying it doesn't do squat. But they have potossium and iron among other things. And keeps things moving along.

I am 79 and have taken the same whole food supplements for 29 years. I have not taken any medications or drugs and have never been under doctor's care. People are amazed at my age, my grandchildren call me the young grandmother, their other one is 8 years younger than I am. I still have great looking legs and my husband still says I am a "good looking woman," that's enough reason to have taken good care of myself all these years! God has Blessed me with good health and a wonderful family.

I have taken suplements on and off since I was in my 20"s. One thing that I have noticed is that is better for me if I do not take the full dosage recomended on the bottle. I feel better taking half to three quarters the dosage and will sometimes not take them for a day or two to help clean excess suplements out of my system.

Like several others here, I take magnesium. I can definitely tell the difference when i haven't taken it for a while. Then I can feel the difference right after I've taken it.

I should be taking B12 because I also have a vegan diet. But it can be expensive, so I'm trying to get it from some cereals and some enriched foods.

I used to take a multivitamin. I haven't found one that I like after the one that I really liked wasn't in the stores anymore. I don't like swallowing pills and most multivitamin gummies give me a headache. The single vitamin gummies are fine though.

Nice to read about the raisins and iron since I just bought a bunch.
