Talking through masks

Do you have any trouble understanding people when they are talking while wearing a COVID mask? I've had that problem twice now. Once when a roofer came, I had to repeat everything I said to him and then shout. The same thing in church yesterday. I asked for a prayer request. The pastor couldn't inderstand me. He even came from behind the pulpit and stood the required 6 feet away. He still didn't understand. I shouted - he just shook his head. Today on the email of prayer requests, they had the person's name I had asked prayers for was misspelled.

Don't feel bad. Maybe your pastor is like mine was, deaf from having the accompanying music played too loud over the church speakers.

I understand people just fine. Only came across one woman working at the Pharmacy in Walmart, behind a plexiglass shield wearing a mask and face shield. She could not understand me until she bent down to the bottom opening to listen. She did that with mostly every customer before me. Perhaps she was hard of hearing?

I haven't had a problem with hearing anyone wearing a mask but I think a man had a hard time hearing me. I talk rather low and it may have been that--I'm not a loud talker.

I know I have hearing loss, was in the process of seeking hearing aids when the virus arrived and I’ve already lost 2 cheap earrings in the process of putting on and taking off masks at appropriate times. Am not going to risk losing a $$$$ hearing aid the same way at this time. And yea I have some trouble understanding some people talking to me through masks, especially if they aren’t facing me directly. Sound is a bit muffled. And also realized that I was using lip reading more than I thought. I’m just going to muddle through and politely ask them to repeat if necessary.

I had trouble long before the masks came along.

I can hear all right through the masks, but I have a terrible time recognizing people when they are wearing them. Just the eyes aren't enough to do it for me. It's embarrassing, but I often have to ask, "Who are you?" Mostly they laugh and say they have the same problem.

I lip read - which gives me problems with mask wearers. I also dislike the sterile "no smiles" culture they foster.

It's frustrating as hell trying to understand what people say or get them to understand what I'm saying. I then get mad & shout at ppl. That they hear. LOL (Sorry bout my spelling...LOL)

I have a problem hearing also and the masks don't help. Another problem I'm having is tying the mask on. I'm always afraid when I take it off or the mask comes loose my hearing aids will fall out before I notice it. I have enough stuff hanging on my ears, hearing aids, glasses and now a mask. My ears can't take much more weight or they will be flopping down like a hound dog.

I hear you Ruth….Yes I have hearing aids....I only use one, cause the other ear bother's me to wear....I sometime forget
to take my hearing aid off when I go in the shower...Last night I was yelling for my husband to come and get my hearing aid....They were very expensive....They didn't get wet, though...
Yes, the mask is another problem....It's been hot....We went to BJ's the other day and we put on the masks to go into
the store...Good thing we only needed a few things, My face was sweating....And they are good masks....I don't wear a
mask when I'm in the house or in our yard....

My poor hearing & masks are not a good match. Most of the time, I'll just nod my head when I don't understand what someone said.

I have good hearing but often can't understand people wearing masks when they talk to me. I used to nod, but I don't know what I might be agreeing to. So now I just have to let it go.

Nice to know I'm not alone with hard to hear through the mask wearing folks.

Now I'm having trouble hearing hubby,, seems to me he speaks lower than he used to.
Well, when it comes to our "mates", that mask business can be confused with "selective hearing". My wife has accused me of "selective hearing" for many years, even before my hearing ability actually started to diminish.😵

i went and had my eyes checked yesterday and the man that was doing it got mad at me cause i could hear him -i am also deaf in one ear

I hear you....Sometimes I would ignore....or just shake my head....Especially in the store....The cashiers. have masks on....I can't hear them when
I'm packing the order.....Don't be sorry about spelling....I understand...

nothing personal here but since i'm in food service it's actually nice not having to frickin smile ALL the time. it's a brief reprieve for me. *grins* they can see it in our eyes though. luckily they can't see what i'm saying under my breath under my mask. lmbo!
