Tall sailing ship hits the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC

They say it had 277 cadets aboard so those masts probably hit more than one person and/or knocked several into the water. Apparently they ship had just arrived for an event which might explain their trouble with clearance.

It says the ship lost power and drifted into the bridge.

Pure speculation ...

The video I saw looked like the ship was also headed really close to the sea wall on shore.
If lost power, may have lost steering too.
Wonder if anyone thought to drop anchor when power was lost and they saw they were perilously drifting?

It looks like they did nothing except watch it unfold. I think there were still sailors up on the masts.
Should have at least gotten everyone off the masts, and ordered everyone to strike below deck.
... but if they lost power, they probably lost power to any announcing system that might be onboard.

Even if power lost, the ship's horn should have still had air pressure ...
Five or more short rapid blasts signify danger.
Ship's horn and ship's bell could have been used to alert crew if power lost and drifting perilously.

Okay WHOA ... wait a minute ...
If IF they lost power, riddle me this ...
How come the string of lights all over the ship were still lit up ?!?!?!

Maybe they just lost steering ?? Reduced power ??

Lots of unanswered questions at this point.
One thing I read is that the cadet class was so large this year,
Some of the experienced crew was held back and cadets were expected to step up to responsibility.
The whole thing might just boil down to inexperience in key positions, lack of training and inattention to detail. Dunno.

EDIT: Another very strange thing is that the ship was backing up. Or at least moving in a backward direction.
The ship approached the bridge, stern first.
At no point during the collision with the bridge did it appear the ship tried to move forward and away from the bridge.

Just saw this on my local news. Was so shocked & frightened I shrieked and fell into a chair.
I have never walked over the Brooklyn Bridge. My grandma would tell me stories of how she crossed the bridge, every day, to work. So, in my mind, I walked the bridge with her.

I rode over the bridge. A million times.

This ship ended up at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Just a few days ago my son and DIL were in that space. What if?

Heard bridge not damaged.

I say I never walked the bridge, but realized I have during my Vietnam Protest Days. From the Brooklyn side to Lower Manhattan! I did walk the bridge, but I only remember The People, the massive crowd walking with me. So, I don't remember the bridge, I remember the reason I walked and those who were with me. Didn't notice East River, too involved with the Great Cause of stopping the war.

People, this isn’t funny. Two people are dead. There’s nothing funny about that. This ship being from Mexico maybe doesn’t understand how to convert Metric into English dimensions.

It seems yesterday was a very bad day for a lot of families between accidents, tornados and storms.

Without the capacity to steer, the ship was helpless against the strong current.
I haven't read how the 2 individuals died in the accident. The passengers could surely have seen the collision coming. I'm sure that will be revealed.
