Going slightly off track for a moment, when I was a girl at school I was taught that the words man, mankind and he, him and his could include the female versions. Out school motto was translated from the Latin as "Every man is the maker of his own fortune". It was a girls only school.
Other famous quotes such as ""We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" are supposed to apply equally to men and women but in fact they didn't seem that way when as a woman I faced so much discrimination.
As a consequence I identified with the Women's Liberation movement.
Thinking about the 11 year old student in the OP I am of the opinion that she is likely to be a young girl who believes herself to be male rather than female. She may be taking hormones to delay puberty with her parents' consent so that later, should she still want to transition, she will not have to have masectomies. We know nothing about the child but I could well imagine that the parents chose this progressive school for a reason. Bullying would be very likely in a co-ed school from both the boys and the other girls.
The catholic girls' school, where I taught for 25 years, accepted a non catholic student from a public school for pastoral reasons. She had uneven breast development and once the boys found out they gave her hell every day. When she was in an all female environment she was accepted and supported. Being accepted and supported is vitally important for any child who feels different.
