In no school where I was ever a teacher was there any gun other than the starter's pistol used at the athletics carnival each year.
Nothing more lethal than the archery equipment ever found its way into the kids' hands, unless you count the discus.

Nothing like this was ever heard of when I went to school in the stone age. That is awful. Could have been a tragedy and a nightmare.

I wonder if the woman has fear of a school shooting like those in the past. I feel a little empathy for her but that could have ended badly. Very glad no one was hurt. Can just imagine what the parents had to say!

Good morning to all- I was a teacher for nearly 40 years, and one of the very, very few things that would have moved me to quit teaching before I retired would have been a situation if I were REQUIRED to carry a gun on campus. Of all places on Earth to not have a gun of any kind- school is it.
I expect my response to any administrator or school board member who told me I HAD to carry a gun would be something like" You can carry this gun yourself in a safe location- but you may have to go to the hospital to get it removed."
Guns on campus- ridiculous.
good day to all- Ed

Yes & I can't imagine what it would do to someone who loved children to discover that they had been the cause of a child's death. My daughter is a teacher and she adores children & always has.

My How times have changed. My oldest brother and I were on the school rifle squad. There was a range under the school. In the morning we would hand our rifles to the bus driver, upon arrival at school the coach put them in his office till practice. Never to my knowledge was there a mishap. Possibly if todays children had the exposure to firearms and their benefits,we would not be in the pickle we are today.

We were good people, what has happened to our country?

That's the first time I've ever heard of something like that being done in school. Today's children are much different than yesterdays children I think. I'll give you just an example I was thinking of the other day, not about this topic even but how things have changed- I was remembering how much I had loved going to a drive in movie. I was thinking how nice it would be if they still had them. Then I thought of how dangerous they would be if they had them now. It's a different world than yesteryear.

Were the rifles loaded when you handed them to the bus driver?

No they weren't loaded. Long guns are kept unloaded until you are actually in the field or on the firing line at the range. Hand guns are normally kept loaded as they're designed for self defense. If kept unloaded it would kind of defeat the purpose.

All that being said, owning and handling a firearm is an awesome responsibility. This teacher failed in that responsibility. I would not hang her, but I would see to it that she had some remedial training in firearm safety.

I guess I'm not that understanding. If someone whom I entrust my child with puts my child's life in harms way out of stupid carelessness I'd sue their socks off ;)

She has resigned. Whether it was a forced resignation or she left because she felt devastated by her mistake is not clear.

Yeah well probably best. I'm not saying the woman is evil she made a mistake, but certain things should never ever happen where children are involved.
