Teachers across the U.S. say they’re so worried about returning to schools reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic that some are preparing their last wills and testaments.

Andrea Clark, a fifth-grade teacher and teachers union representative in St. Johns County, Florida, told First Coast News that she’s heard from at least 10 teachers fearing for their lives if in-person learning resumes this fall while Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the state.

“They are so concerned about returning to school that they are updating their wills or making their wills,” Clark said. “Some teachers have underlying health concerns where they feel fairly certain that if they caught Covid-19, it would be a bad outcome, possibly fatal.”.......read on.....

(Could this actually be true? this is one of the saddest I've read to date :( ).....lots of teachers nationwide will not be returning to their professional jobs in person....what a truly sad loss)
 

My granddaughter, who teaches Chemistry and Biology in a high school for high-functioning autistic students, has been informed by her school that the teachers *will not* be wearing masks in the schoolroom. The rationale is that the students depend a lot on facial expressions from the teachers. If a teacher insists on a mask, the school "will attempt to place the teacher in a position where he/she will be able to mask". In other words.....they'd better not want to wear a mask if they want to teach there. We'll see how long THAT lasts.....

This could very well be the stupidest thing I have ever heard. No wonder the numbers soar every day.
 
And yet.............my local Stop & Shop has had the same cashiers working every day since March.

I don't think any schools should be opening at all, but if this is their rational then why not use pictures with facial expressions that teachers could hold up as they speak?
 
Our schools are set to open in late August. Given how quickly things are changing with this virus, it may be just a few days before opening before any real policies can be determined. Our granddaughters are having an interesting time trying to balance their workloads with the changing conditions at the schools. We, and the other grandparents/parents have been helping out, but I imagine that parents without nearby relatives are really getting stressed out.

And then....the teachers and the medical workers who have to face this virus as part of their daily activities must really be going through Hell.
 
My DIL's school had to submit plans to state for reopening schools this fall. They submitted 3, on-site, remote, hybrid of two, then state came back and said no, all schools will be on site. Period No other guide lines other than be safe. So if teacher or student tests positive, does everybody in contact get quarantined? If teacher gets the virus, how willing will a substitute teacher be to step into that classroom. Most substitutes are retired teachers who are going to refuse. Who is going to clean and check rooms and students. Rural school so busing has to be doubled for social distancing. Granddaughter has heart problem, so she has to go to school? Heck if you can't make adults wear masks in grocery stores, how to do you make kids wear all the time? Predict huge spike this fall after schools reopen. So all the critics that say open the schools are looking forward to send their grandchildren to school?

I predict a lot of homeschooling in situations like your DIL's.

If our governor hadn't shut down schools in our area due to the virus spike, my DIL was going to stay home (she's a teacher) and homeschool her two children. Many of her teacher and non-teacher friends with young children had similar plans.
 
I wonder how the deaf are managing? I think all deaf people rely somewhat on reading lips. This must be a terrible problem for them. And what about someone trying to teach a class of deaf students? Maybe they are returning to the good old "blackboard" (usually a white board, these days) and just write everything down?
 
There are masks with transparent plastic windows and face shields.

Deaf students are taught using sign language (ASL in the US) and fingerspelling, not lipreading, which can be wildly inaccurate unless one already has a very good grasp of the context and therefore won't misinterpret similar mouth movements.
 
Somebody told me about this yesterday. OMG! It shouldn't come to that. My DIL and ex-DIL, whom I love like they are my own daughters, are both in the school system. The former is a TA, the latter, an administrator. I'll be worried about them if they reopen schools in September as planned. I know several people in the school system and they are not happy about the planned reopenings. Schools in my city are over crowded. They will have to come up with a system to not only alleviate the already crowded conditions but allow for safe distances between the students. Even if they institute staggered sessions, it will be hard.
