This afternoon at the outdoor viewing gallery on the 10th floor of the Tate Modern Museum London, a 17 year old was arrested after picking up and throwing a 6 year old boy over the top.

The boy landed on the 5th floor with critical injuries and the teen has been charged with attempted murder... :(

This was a random act, according to reports the teenager was a stranger to the family!!

Aww, jeesh. What’s wrong with people? Bad home life? Mommy and Daddy not nurturing enough? Somethings causing these young people to go whacko.

Teens see things we never saw and they see them every day ,minute after minute. It has to warp their minds. Violence is everywhere. Little tots are playing video games and they are not the videos we saw as young children. It's like raising children in rooms filled with the poison gas.

with a little luck' we all may have nice and welcoming news next week
With all respect Toffee, there is good news around us every day - it just doesn't make the headlines. Yesterday Hubby and I spent the day helping our single grand daughter who is hosting a young Japanese girl in Australia for a 2 week cultural visit. We drove them to a wildlife park in the morning then continued into the city by train where we had lunch at an art museum followed by a ferry ride on Sydney Harbour.

The good news? Nothing bad happened and we met lots of lovely people on public transport and chatted away in a very friendly atmosphere. There were smiles all round as we went our separate ways. Also good news is that Sydney is a melting pot for people from every continent and every culture. For example on one of our train trips we started talking to a mother of a young baby. She was with her mother and father who spoke little English. They were Italians. Her baby, she explained, had a father who is half Spanish and half Maori. What a combination! Italian/Spanish/Maori baby who will grow up to be a little Aussie. This is what my city is like in microcosm. Our little Japanese girl saw nearly as many Asian faces as European ones yesterday with a few African ones thrown in.

The good news is that everyone was doing what we were - going about our business peacefully and making no trouble. But you will never hear a report like this on the news because it is all too commonplace but you can see it if you look around you.

There are too many whackos running around loose! This made me think of the man who grabbed a boy and attempted to throw him on the RR tracks. Good thing the child's mother and grandmother were present. And of course as Aunt Bea mentioned, there was the Mall of America incident. I hope both of these children wil heal well and be okay physically. I can't imagine the mental trauma they must feel which may need to be dealt with professionally. I cant fathom why people do these types of things but these are good examples of why people need to hold on to their children. I hope that young man gets the stiffest sentence possible.

Yeah...there were no violent video games when I was a child. But my parents dropped me & my sister off at a movie theater when she didn't want us around (8 & 6 yrs. old) where we saw violent, bloody movies, including "The Pit & The Pendulum" & many others.
I don't think a violent movie or video game will cause violent behavior, unless the child is already mentally ill to begin with.

There seems to be a lot of mentally ill people on the loose. Surely someone who acted like this must have already been showing signs of insanity? I wonder what excuse his lawyer will come up with. Forgot to take his medication?

They'll say he had a bad childhood or some such. Sorry, but lotsa folks have bad childhoods and don't go around throwing toddlers off of tall buildings.

Or maybe the famous "twinkie" defense -- the bad diet and sugar rush made him do it.

Or maybe that defense that rich kid used some time ago -- the "affluenza" defense -- "I was too rich and privileged to know any better."

I was just thinking..I believe that along with violent video games.., movies, the dark web... drugs etc.. in this culture also we mustn't forget that some of these people were already mentally affected by being BORN to a mother who was already a heavy drug user (evil drugs like crack , meth, spice etc) too and I wonder just how significant that might be, even if the younger person themselves have never been a user. There should be larger studies on the brains of children born to heavy drinkers, and drug users as they grow up.. then add into the mix all the former..knife culture, crazy seriously violent movies, Dark web..all a seriously dangerous mix!!

yes but @win231 , the level of violence and depravity then (in fact there was hardly any )..was nowhere near what it is today..have you seen any of these movies and games today?..seriously..they would make your hair fall out... .. I can't look at them, just horrendous!!..and not only that you weren't watching them day in day out..as many of these disturbed people do..

I know this is a controversial subject, but I do wonder whether some babies who are born to obviously unfit mothers, might be better off raised in an institution? There are those who will be outraged at the suggestion but I think it's something which should be seriously considered. At the moment, babies are not taken into care until they have suffered at the hands of these mothers. Sadly, too many suffer horribly and die before anyone learns about them.

I'm beginning to believe that the people that do these things are the canaries in the coal mine.

It seems like something in our world/environment is impacting our ability to control the sudden emotional impulses and urges that we all experience but are normally able to tamp down and get past.

Then again it could just be my need to have an explanation for these terrible events.

Is it normal to have the sudden urge to throw a little child to its death (I know the child hasn't died but it's a miracle he hasn't). Certainly there is something wrong with our modern society. It all started when mankind chose to live in large towns and we lost contact with each other. When people live in small communities, everyone knows everyone else and are aware of any problems. Children need to contribute to society. Take the present situation...here in Britain the schools are closed for 6 weeks. There are hordes of children with time on their hands, causing trouble. Originally the holiday was for children to help on the farms, so they were kept usefully occupied.

Often, such mothers are not only unfit, they're drug users & heavy drinkers, which has a detrimental effect on the baby's brain - similar to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Many inmates on death row have F.A.L.
I knew a guy whose wife had that. She was constantly in & out of jail for fraud, shoplifting, forgery, and illegal gun possession. She also slept with anybody, anytime, anywhere. People with F.A.L have no impulse control & no conscience.

I saw that, horrifying. To throw a helpless child from height. What he was trying to accomplish in his mind is beyond me. I just don't get these pos predators chosing strangers to be their victims. A serial killer has a type of victim but these one timers it hard to contemplate why they chose their victim or what they did.

This criminal needs to be made an example for life and be a registered child abuser forever. Certain criminal acts legally or socially one should not be ever accepted as 'normal'. They are malfunctions that should be in the landfill or scrap heap of life.
