Thawing chicken.....

How long after thawing [in a refrigerator] is chicken still good ? I took it from the freezer & put it in the fridge Sat, and would like to crockpot cook it Christmas day {Didn't realize Christmas was a week away] Would it be safe to eat ?
I hope you've thrown it away by now.
Food poisoning is unpleasant- and can be dangerous.

I found this on the US Department of Agriculture website:

Knowledge Article
While foods are in the process of thawing in the refrigerator (40 °F or less), they remain safe. After thawing, use ground meats, poultry, and fish within one or two additional days, and use beef, pork, lamb or veal (roasts, steaks, or chops) within three to five days.
I wouldn't take them too seriously. A few years ago I had a question about chicken- person on their chat said it should be good, members here said it would not... turned out the SF members were right.

Well .... after reading the repsonces to my question ....... I indeed decided to 'pitch-it' .

And since it is Christmas supper I decided to up-grade to Lamb chops. Crockpotted with onion, carrots & a side of steamed broccoli ......... Yum-Yum !
best decision you could have made....lab is far superior to Chicken, much less mouldy chicken... :sneaky:

Something like store bought breaded and deep fried cod found in you grocers' freezer could probably stand being un-thawed a little longer, but raw meat no.

Why? Poultry turns bad very fast and food poisoning will make you very sick and kill you very fast. I’ve had food poisoning as a child. Most frozen foods need to be defrosted in the fridge, or the microwave, and cooked right away.
For most reasonably healthy people, food poisoning is not fatal; it's just miserable. I think the only really dangerous types are E-Coli & Botulism. The biggest risk with the usual types of food poisoning (Salmonella) is dehydration from vomiting & diarrhea. I've had it 5 times - always from restaurants. I made sure to drink extra water.

I googled info on food safety and I was so surprised to find out that leaving a baked potato in aluminum foil can allow botulism organism to grow. It is a miracle I have not poisoned myself in the past. Nowadays I use a microwave plastic cooking bag for potatoes.

I have never had it nor has anyone else I know. You can't get it if you cook soon after the meat is not frozen. That means you can use a rub or marinade when thawed then stick it back in the fridge for hours before cooking. I would never defrost a slice of meat in a microwave. I seldom buy frozen meat. Think about all the meat in the stores that is not frozen if you are so concerned with getting sick.

I am not personally concerned. I rarely cook and have not cooked raw chicken since KFC opened. 😂. I defrost hamburger in the fridge. I am not concerned about getting sick. However, most people who get food poisoning get it from salad mixes, eggs, and vegetables-strange.

I got food poisoning when I was 10 years old, parents sued the company, and got a small settlement.

Getting food poisoning from salad can happen from "Cross Contamination" when raw meat is handled or prepared on a cutting board, then salad is prepared without washing hands or the cutting board or any surface that the meat touched.
If I prepared meat (which I don't), I would have two cutting boards separately used for meat & anything eaten raw like fruit/vegetables.

I defrost frozen burger with a fan on my countertop.
