The Big Three for Seniors

It seems to me in my every day life that people over 65 have 3 things in their life:
Religion
Politics
Doctors visits and health issues
I noticed this way before I became a senior. I think it's sad that a lot of people I know don't have a life beyond this. I believe that's why those discussions become central to their lives. TV news is never turned off so they are steeped in political BS all day, which btw probably impacts their health. Personally, I am sick to death of politics and politicians.
Get a life, people! Find some hobbies and joy in everyday living. Just venting😂

I agree with you 100% !

Politics - oh yuck, yuck, yuck
Religion - not so much but I do read some christian books
Doctor - no much as I handled most of my own health stuff (some advice has come from the doctor and tests, etc).
Health issues - well yes, most of us have this as we get older
Other big things in my life - family; cooking, reading ( a lot more than when I worked); walking.
I do read the daily news paper but I skip over most of it.
Hobbies: see above.

Religion is important, believing in time tested teaching of values and rules of conduct gives a person a moral compass by which to navigate the pitfalls of life.
Politics has become weaponized, corrupt media has thrown accusations and doubt on legitimate news sources, to where people are confused.
Doctors and health issues are hard to escape, being that our bodies are wearing out and becoming compromised by decades of poor lifestyle choices.

My hobby has become fitness, keeps me busy doing something constructive....and it's fun!

We keep busy...Me and My hubby...Also we have my son and daughter in law 2 blocks away..We see them almost everyday...We did cover the pool, cause we are leaving to another state...
We don't put the TV on every day...In fact my husband just turned something on in the other room..
My daughter is 1 hour away and mostly comes here a couple of times in the week....My brother came a
couple of times and I do phone my friends every once and a while...I can't wait till this shif goes away so
I can see my friends.... I do like to see what is going on in the USA....Though...But not everyday...
I also go to a chiropractor 2 times a week and hubby is almost done with his chiropractor...

Say what you like but politics is important. It influences your life and especially health issues like insurance coverage, especially when you get older.

So I say get informed and vote for the platform that influences your life.

What's the point of voting for someone who is directly opposed to what you need?

Your needs change as you get older. Health insurance is going to be a big issue in this election.

That's one of the primary reasons we moved to a rural area. In the first year of my retirement, I quickly finished off the projects I'd been saving. Then, I found myself watching way too much TV and starting to gain weight...from lack of activity. When we found this piece of heavy forestland, all that changed. Now, even after living here for almost 18 years, my "to do" list never seems to diminish, and my health/weight, etc., has steadied. I watch the morning and evening news....primarily to get multiple weather forecasts, and I am a real fan of Wheel of Fortune....but, outside of that, TV is not a big part of my life.

LOVE - LOVE - LOVE your post. I agree 💯 I am not big on politics.. what will be will be. I am not big on doctor visits nor Religion.. I am more spiritual. I am 60 but I don't see me changing in 5 or more years. If I lost my sense of humor, I would put out an APB and offer a Cash Reward

Religion-- no problem as an atheist
Politics -- I vote for who I think might actually get something done.
Doctors-- 1st. visit this year later this month. Labs great And I'm in great health.

Enjoy everyday above ground no matter what happens.

I think I missed the point in my own post 😁
It's not that we shouldn't have:
Religion
Politics
Doctor's visits/health issues
What gets me is when those are the only things seniors seem to focus on. It reminds me of listening to my grandmother when I was younger and now makes me feel old and one dimensional.

See what I mean? Entire topic here: politics!🤪

One of the main reasons I had stopped taking my sister on vacation with me was because when we shared a suite, she watched MSNBC (politics) damn near all the time when we were inside. It made me crazy. She'd have an excuse to leave it on, even during meals (note that no T.V., phones, devices are allowed at her dinner table). I always paid for the suites so I felt she could at least respect my wish to turn that stuff off sometimes.
The last time we went on vacation, we agreed that she should have (and pay for) her own suite and I'd have mine.

Like you I'm so sick of politics. Poli-tricks was what an ex boyfriend used to call it. I get the political news quickly (World News Tonight) or read what I choose to in my Smart News app. I have a friend who loves to discuss politics and it gets to a point that I have to change the subject. Before COVID I took a lot of vacations, went to the senior center on exercise days, made new friends there and we broke bread together. I went to my son's House music parties where he deejayed at a local club once a month and danced all night (put the young'uns to shame I was told). Even with the extent of my health issues, I never dwelled on them. I see my doctors when I'm supposed to...eye specialist and PCP each 3 - 4 times a year. Right now I'm focusing on my creative endeavors, some of which will be with my son and hopefully two of my musician friends sometime in the future. I do make prayer(s) mostly every day but I admit not the 5 daily that Muslims are supposed to do. And of course there's social networking. I probably spend too much time doing this. :)

I think that may be the case for the USA but generally speaking it doesn't apply to the UK...!! We don't have the same organised religion that the USA has, and our RC and C of E churches lie empty in the main, and we don't have television religion as you do in the USA , and the very last thing anyone discusses here is what church anyone attends or religion generally .. , politics unless in your own group or family is also something that's left alone , although people are interested in knowing what's occurring day-to-day it's not a huge deal here in the same way as the USA unless one is politically involved.

Health as we get older does tend to be a topic of discussion, that's the same here...but, currently of course the main topic of conversation here is Covid-19, the destruction it's causing and has caused to our small Island in the massive loss of jobs and closure of huge companies etc,.. and the very real concern for the future.

Seems to me I recall a bit of discussion about an issue in the UK -- Brexit, perhaps? But I get your drift about religion. When my church choir sang in the UK it was mostly to empty churches.

Yes Brexit is a serious topic of discussion but of course it's politics, and again, although concerned, most of us keep politics discussions in house.. ( or among friends)

I am a Christian, but do not discuss it or force it on anyone. It is between God and me. I did get into politics on FB, but joined this forum due to their NO politics rule. I never discuss it in person with anyone. I like it here and that is why I try to stay away from the hot topics. I do not have regular television, but watch my news on certain YouTube channels. I watch mainly videos about woman like me, my age, single, frugal who like to cook and do home decor. I spend a lot of time on my family tree or writing my blog. Nobody is interested in those things so I don't really talk about it to others.

My mother always said not to discuss your religion, politics or finances with anyone outside your home. She was right. Now people will come right out and ask you directly if you don't mention it.

I've found that it's not possible to have a discussion on certain topics with certain people.

Sometimes it's easier to sit back and listen without offering any personal opinions.

Hey.... not true.

I listed to the morning show this morning, and they went 7 minutes before slamming Trump....

So.... it isn't all about politics..... :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::giggle::giggle:

Retirement is a thrive or die situation.... either you get busy, stay busy, or sit on the couch for the golden years.

I intend to work (enrolled agent) until I can't..... it is a social outlet, and the money isn't bad...... I'm working today..... as a mystery shopper.... beautiful day to get out and drive around.... shopping.... and it won't cost me.....;)

So....

politics..... already covered in the morning show
religion.... yes, I listen to gospel music in my car so I will get my daily dose...
health.... been to the gym already....

I guess I got the important things in retirement (aging) covered.... TTFN

Oh my! That would be distressing ... but it's definitely not been my experience. The majority of older people with whom I associate seem to be, like myself, primarily focused on planning and doing. Projects large and small; physical or cerebral. Recreational activities. General household chores.

For myself:

Certainly, as a Christian, my life with Christ is of paramount importance to me, but that's the context rather than the object of my daily focus.

Politics, as shoveled out by the so-called 'news' media, is a crashing bore at best.

Serious health issues must be addressed but, to the extent possible, are worked around as best they can be.

Different people, different perceptions.

I zoom weekly with 8-12 people I went to school with, so we're the same age. Less frequently I zoom with a family group. Also another group of friends who are similar in age.

Religion never comes up in any of these groups. Some members are religious, some aren't, but it's virtually never included in our conversation.
Politics get touched on, but why wouldn't they? It's a very contentious presidential election year and many of us believe the stakes are high. Of course it comes up. We don't dwell though.
Doctors/health - only if someone recently had an issue and in that case it's an update. Other than that, no.

Mostly we discuss what we've been up to the previous week, how our kids and grands are doing, and the weather because we're scattered across the country.

We talk about home remodels and repairs, jobs (some are still working), gardening, special new things happening in our lives and future plans. A myriad of things.

Lately the pandemic has been very much on our minds. A few of us have lost friends to Covid. We are all taking it very seriously and worry over our families.

In our 30s we talked about very similar things, except the crises du jour were different.

I'm very happy not to be a typical senior (at least yet.)

Politics are probably the major one in my life but I'm not very outwardly political. I am working towards things that I believe will help others, maintain or improve our environment and make the world a better place to live. However I do believe we are all trying to make our world a better place to live, but our definitions of a better place are often very different and place different values on aspects of that world.

I'm not religious and never have been so that really a major part of my life. I do occasionally call upon some of the atheistic spirituality (best term I have for it even though the two terms are somewhat in-congruent).

Thankfully due to good genes and a desire to stay healthy I've been able to keep doctor visits and health issues to a minimum. I hope to be able to keep that up as I continue to get older.

So for me the most important things in my life are:

Music (I love listening to the music I love and discovering new music to love)
Health and fitness - see above
Art - not experiencing much of it these days due to galleries and museums being closed, but it's still on my mind
