The black dogs project - real dogs, not about depression.

Lovely photos. My last little dog was a 'rescue' one and she was black. Sadly, I had to say goodbye to her a few weeks ago, she was almost 16. I do miss her.

Thank you. My little Bonnie had Addison's disease, kept under control by medication and keeping her stress free. It's strange not having a dog around the house anymore having had dogs for over 40 years but she's definitely the last. Don't want any more heartbreaks!

We had a couple of rescue dogs in the past but they were a disaster. I think it is best to have a puppy from a reputable breeder and train it to a high standard.

I must have been very fortunate then as every one of my dogs have been rescue, some mongrel, some pedigree and not had a problem with any of them.

I believe dogs need to be trained to know their place, otherwise they can become uncontrollable and a danger. They are NOT humans and whilst they should never be ill treated they be treated as the animals they are, imo.

We never had a dog young enough to train but also never had a problem dog.
Some were intelligent, others bubble headed but none were aggressive.
I would never describe them as obedient but they were generally co-operative.

I hope they bring back the dog licence in the UK of at least £100. Those wishing to have a dog should have to take a mandatory course to look after the animal properly, and train it to a high standard so it isn't a nuisance or a danger. There are far too many out of control dogs, who have caused death and injury, because their owners don't handle them properly.

Our daughter's small poodle went to puppy school and he is a delightfully well behaved dog but he was never going to be all that dangerous. However, as he has grown older he can't be trusted around small children. He just gets shut away when they are present.

I would have a dog like that put down.

I find most old dogs get a bit snappy when they are pulled around by children once they get a bit arthritic.
I never leave small children and dogs alone together in any case, no matter how safe I think the dog.

Pam, so sad that you lost your little Bonnie, she looks very sweet! It's hard when they have a disease and are in need of medications like that, we're going through the same thing right now with our dog and an auto-immune disease he's developed. We always got another dog when we lost one, it heals the heart and gives them a nice home.

I have heard that people are less likely to adopt black dogs and black cats. Superstitions are related to the cats.

Apparently people are less inclined to choose a black dog at an animal shelter.
This photographer has made a series of photos of black dogs against a black background.
Some of them are very appealing.

These are beautiful, thank you WG! When I was growing up, I remember hearing some of the adults saying black dogs were stupid. I don't know what anyone would think that but it's a shame kids grow up hearing and believing those sorts of lies:( denise PS I don't recall ever seeing photos like these, and it is such a neat idea, lovely!

Thank you and I hope something can be done for your little dog.
