The dark side of Christmas

Before it became unfashionable to traumatize your children at Christmastime — the holiday season was a month-long struggle between dark and light. Here’s a look at the origins of the dark, sinister and just plain mischievous creatures of European folklore who might have come knocking on Christmas Eve 150 years ago.

Oh no, that is not my motive. :) I was thinking about how in the Bible and in Christmas songs it talks about saving us all from Satan's power ( Jesus birth and mission ). How light and dark ( good and evil ) are a part of the Christmas celebration. I wondered if there was a story about this before Christmas became commercialized. It is one of our deepest quests ... the "meaning of life."

This lyric is about Santa coming to town....it's kind of spooky.

He sees you when you're sleeping
And he knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake

Omniscience? Reward the good, punish the bad ( dark ).
Now we also have that dang 'elf on a shelf.' Watching. At least we didn't have him when we were young.

Must be missing something as I have never heard of this. Not a clue of Elf on the Shelf either.

"He sees you when you're sleeping" is just about the parents knowing all about kids actions and trying to keep them good before Christmas. Not a big thing in my opinion, I have said that Santa won't come if they don't go to bed. (Reward for good). I don't need Christmas to punish the bad.

This is fascinating. The time of year is the winter solstice...now just past and getting lighter. Has been celebrated as long as we have recorded history. Then they put Jesus near there, and the BIG fight for the future of mankind erupts, with the birth of Jesus and him destroying the power of Satan. The Devil. Evil. Darkness. Hell. Ok that is the real dark version. Then we have all kinds of dark characters of the light version
  1. Mr. Potter.
  2. The Grinch. Dr. ...
  3. Ebenezer Scrooge. A Christmas Carol (1938) ...
  4. The Bumble. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) ...
  5. Hans Gruber. ...
  6. Burgermeister Meisterburger. ...
  7. Harry and Marv. ...
  8. Oogie Boogie. ...
It looks like you can't have one without having a little or A LOT of the other. :)

True those demons from Europe sure were a nasty bunch!

Today, in 2022, I see 3 big elements of the dark side of Christmas:
1. Financial strain caused by almost 2 months of shopping for Christmas Day (December 25).
2. The pollution and waste of time and energy caused by all the "junk" that some people buy.
3. The big letdown & feelings of depression when all the credit card bills come in around January 21st.

Merry Christmas to one and to all (but like all good things; keep it simple).
