The first film you went to see at the pictures

The first film I went to see at a local picture house or cinema, south of Manchester, UK was "The sound of music" of course in technicolor, with the wonderful Julie Andrews playing the lead Maria, and an actor who passed recently, Christopher Plummer, the male lead.

There were seven of us children too, similar to the film, though not do prone to singing!

(in truth I think I'd seen a black and white film during a school trip before this, but all I can remember is frequent interruptions due to the film snapping or something, and everyone misbehaving, no idea of the title however).
 

first picture i ever saw was when we were kids. mom and dad took us to the drive in movies. i just remember not being interested. no clue what they took us to see. brother and i fought like couple racoons in the back.

Can't remember the film, but that bloke at the front playing the organ used to get on my nerves. :LOL:
 

The first film I ever saw was as a stag movie...Disney's "Bambi." A little later, my parents dragged me along to films they wanted to see; "The Manchurian Candidate" and "The Lion In Winter" were two of them, incomprehensible to a young me at the time. I guess they didn't want to pay for a babysitter...

Not sure what the film was called but I know it was about American Indians and starred Victor Mature. I was seven years old and I got very upset when a baby died in the film.

So, at the ripe old age of 15, my big sis and future bro in law took me with 'em

The cleavage made quite an impression
 
Throughout my childhood my grandfather would take me to the travelogues at the local university. I don't know if this sort of thing is done much any more. Men who had traveled and studied extensively in interesting and exotic parts of the world would narrate their films, presenting the cultures, geography, flora and fauna the subject areas. The auditoriums were usually packed.

An aunt and uncle took me to see my first commercial film which was the musical South Pacific. That was probably in about 1958.

I dont remember the first film I ever saw but I do remember being dragged to grown up films like Cleopatra, Valley of the Dolls and Rosemary's Baby. I did go to children's movies too.

I think it was Man With The Golden Arm starring Frank Sinatra about an addict who's released from prison and tries to get and stay clean. I must've been 8 according to the release date of the film (1955) and my mother took me. Clearly it wasn't meant for children and I really didn't understand what was going on at the time. I don't know why she wanted to see it and don't remember my mother going to another movie after that.
 
When I was about 8yrs old my Mom insisted my sister take me to the afternoon matinee at a theater near us. My sister didn't want to take me because she liked one of the boys that also was going. My Mom won and my sister got stuck with taking me. The movie was "The House of Wax." It scared me soo bad that I sat on my sister's lap through the whole movie. My sister wasn't happy either.

Dad took us to a drive-in because mom was pregnant and needed a night out. Me and my brother were in our pajamas and slippers so mom wouldn't let us go with dad to the snack bar. **Snack Bar** It sounded so magical to me. And it looked magical, all lit up inside, with colorful signs and posters and people and their kids all milling around in there.

It was an animated Disney movie, but what I remember most is wantonly staring out the window at the snack bar every time the "Visit our concession stand" commercial came on. Remember the endless line of marching tubs of popcorn and the circus animal trainer snapping his whip to get the hot dogs to do flips into their buns? I do.

Marci, in the UK just after WW2, there was so much bomb damage, not just houses but cinemas were flattened too, but a few of those cinemas that survived still played the old black and white, silent films, and had someone below the screen playing 'organ' music. The audience in our cinema used to hurl abuse at the organists because he and his wife were rubbish organists. :)

 
Saturday matinee. had a pocket full of silver dollars in my jeans and they were so heavy because it was a mile walk to the theater.
All I remember was it was an Audie Murphy movie. He used to clench his jaw and the boys would all try to mimic that to look macho.
I thought it looked kind of stupid. I always bought a Milky Way candy bar.
My older brother was supposed to take care of me but he would cuss me out and leave me to find my way home alone.
(good training for life, I guess)
