The Internet is Great ...BUT!

Hello All! I love the fact that technology has made advances that we've all benefitted from ... BUT!

I often yearn to speak directly to a live person instead of going through 10 machine-generated prompts before reaching a live person (if at all!).

I love finding valuable information on the Internet BUT, I'm 1) challenged by the tiny print that's so hard to read, 2) there are so many predators and scammers on websites like dating and gaming, and seniors are a primary target, 3) and, my biggest pet peeve of all ...! the incessant pop-up ads that constantly interfere with what you're trying to read on a site.

For goodness sakes, they even have websites where there is a video ad running that is always in your peripheral vision! Do they really think anyone is capable of reading AND listening to a video ad at the same time?

Is it just me that is bothered by this constant mental bombardment? I miss the quietness of how life was before we were so over-taken by technology, as beneficial as it may be. How about you?

I understand how you feel but I am a techie! The AI’s are amazing…. I’m obsessed. Plus, I don’t need any more quiet…. I have too much of quiet in my life.

I totally agree!

I agree. You can load a free blocker program on your computer which automatically blocks a lot of the stuff you don't want to see, and prevents nefarious actors from tracking/spamming. I use "No Script" What is it? - NoScript: Own Your Browser! , but there are several other good ones. You can choose what runs in the background.

The OP mentioned tiny print. The 3 dots in the upper right corner of the Chrome browser have "Zoom" which enables user to enlarge print. I run mine on 125% all the time. On a phone, it's just a matter of touching the screen with the index finger and thumb, moving away from each other to enlarge the print.

As for the rest of the complaints, yes, many hassles, but people who try holding on without internet are eventually going to be left behind, unable to conduct business.

I can read a ton of information super fast, so I don't need to watch videos longer than 2-3 minutes unless it's a song I like, and they average only 4 minutes. If I want to watch news, I turn on TV at 5:30 PM.

What I'm tired of is everyone I do business with asking me if I have their App, and wanting me to download it. No. I just visit their website, and do what I can that way, but I don't want my equipment (phone or laptop) bogged down with Apps for everything I do.

With a more human user name, you might get more of the full human experience here. Today's internet is not great....it is like playing in quicksand.

I went back to using my laptop for research and just reading interesting things and a few movies. I also have several good ad blockers. I can even block by person and website and no popups. A few search engines actually don't show any ads.

Thank you! Happy to learn about ad blockers. I guess it’s a sign of the time that we have to find ways to protect ourselves from bombardment. Anyone know how to block the incessant uninvited text messages? I put in “stop“ and then block the number but they keep on coming!

Look in your phone settings and also 'Do Not Disturb'. You can also block landline calls.

MackTexas...thanks for this reply! I did not know about how you increase the print size, as you outlined above. I just did it and Wow! As I have aged my eyes are not as good as they used to be. By enlarging the print, it is much easier to read the posts....thanks

I agree with what you wrote. I’ve been very computer savvy since the 80s but sometimes get so frustrated. I hate when I have to call a place of business because of a customer service or app issue. If I could solve it myself online, I would have!

Instead, I spend 10 minutes with bots trying to tell me how to troubleshoot online when I already did that. Just give me a live person already, please!

Welcome to the forum! Most has already been written. There are ad blockers as AdBlock and NoScript. And increasing the print size is possible. If doing so you have to scroll a little more until you're at the end of the text, but that's not a real problem.
