The line between being surveilled constantly for your safety and - privacy?

How do you feel about this. Are you completely ok with being videotaped everywhere. For your own health and safety, of course. That is what you will be told. But where do we draw the line ? I see the potential danger in time of people passively accepting these incursions upon our freedoms. Just my two cents. Sometimes I'd just rather be left alone to deal with things myself and be free.

What about you? Do you see any danger at all in this path we are being forced to travel.

As AI continues to develop it is going to be our reality. I think video in a public place is legal. Surveillance can be put anywhere and probably will be. As the price keeps dropping the masses will get good surveillance equipment that will be able to do all kinds of stuff with your image. Some of the fake video's today can fool the general public easily. Mistakes will be made, and that is what bothers me. AI will make mistakes. Hopefully they will be benign. I have the feeling that many of them will cause some kind of damage. I am preparing for this kind of scenario.

Not necessarily videotaped, but being monitored for health reasons seems OK. For example, monitoring of vital signs can lead to getting a person help quickly or before the person suffers a stroke or heart attack. It can also assist in tracking down those engaged in criminal behavior. However, it can be taken to an extreme an violate the human right to be free from constant surveillance.

I believe babies will be micro-chipped at birth...for 'safety'. It will be a suggestion by government at first...then eventually it will become mandatory. Then Big Brother will monitor everyone from cradle to grave. I can see this happening in my life time.

While the idea at first of video in many places was meant as a deterrent ... it really has NOT done that. only sold more video options/ upgrades as the old ones did not have the clarity to ID or maybe see all angles ....
sometimes makes easier to ID the suspect but did not deter the outcome...
Like everything the more intrusion will not live up to the hype and mistakes or unintended consequences will happen....
Only time will tell the fallout.
IMO like so many other things unless a person themselves experiences the bad it will be not credible or dismissed...... but when it happens to them it is the worst thing ever..🤣

Surveillance cannot guarantee safety. In Germany many people are killed in public places with cameras.

I am completely against it. The state has no right to play "Big Brother".
Yet it happens.

Today we had a Skype chat with relatives. They don't speak our language very well and vice versa. Thus we tried the translation with an artificial voice. To my surprise AI imitated the voice of the other persons very good. This is also frightening.

I wish *so* much that I could say I disagree with you on this, Beez... but I can't. 🥺 I think it will happen at some point... maybe not in our lifetime, but you have daughters, and I have a daughter, and I do think they'll see it in theirs. @Beezer

But we have become a fearful society. I can imagine loud voices endorsing this and demanding that it be taken further. Campuses and the college towns near them are a nightmare of cameras, panic buttons, and on and on. There seems to be some belief that everyone should be "safe" walking naked through dicey scenarios, common sense and caution be damned.

I absolutely do NOT want the government (or any entity) to do ANYTHING "for my own good." That is insulting. I will determine what I need and where I need it -- the government is nothing more than a resource-sucking monster that serves itself. And this insistence that the government "knows best" is a complete lie and is told to further its own power and influence.

I think more and more advanced surveillance equipment will be developed. But I doubt we'll notice it. We are now tracked by our phones, and nobody notices. You can't enter a big box store without being seen on multiple cameras, and few notice it. There are license plate readers in use, and nobody notices.

I didn't like it when the stuff first came out, but I don't think much about it now. I don't believe the line that it's for my own safety though. Surveillance is only as good as those watching.

I wrote novel in which everyone was cerebrally micro-chipped at birth and it enabled them to speak to one another without resorting to external telephones.

What specific government invasions of privacy do you refer to?

I notice it Fuzz. Phone and email, we're tracked everywhere.

These are pretty much my feelings on the subject also but there is so much apathy about it, I'm startled.

I’m just as startled that it concerns so many people.

Being monitored doesn’t do anything to restrict our movements or prevent us from doing anything but it might be of some value in an emergency.

If the government has guts enough to look, I’ve got guts enough to show ‘em! 😉🤭😂

I always laughingly suggest that a bar code be placed on each new baby's forehead, not for safety or for the govt to watch them but to take the place of all the plastic cards we all have to carry in our wallets.

I don't mind tracking in public places, though I support good laws to protect the misuse/abuse of any of that info. But otherwise it seems like a very good thing, it really cuts down on people getting away with dishonesty. I love when it catches murderers, or finds lost people, due to tracking things like cell phone tower use, credit card use, etc.

Doesn't seem to be any need to microchip people now that DNA can be analyzed more easily, my sister's murder was before advanced DNA stuff, but her murderer was found 18 years afterward by a DNA match with a prisoner that was incarcerated at the time the cold case was reprocessed with modern methods.

Some people are unjustly placed under intense police surveillance and must endure that type of constant harassment that you mention while the majority of the population remains relatively undisturbed. Ironically, while such innocent people are being harassed, the real criminals fly airplanes into skyscrapers right under their noses.
