The safest way to use a ATM.

Pay bills

I think I saw someone say they pay bills @ ATM. Maybe some machines/accts have that feature.

I pay most bills online.

Another thing you can't get from ATM is single $1 dollar bills, or four $5 bills - you usually have to take multiples of $20 and $10 bills.

Things you cannot do at the ATM:

- get certified check or money order
- access your safe deposit box
- apply for a loan
- get a large bill broken into smaller denominations
- get a roll of quarters, dimes, etc.
- discuss/resolve a problem with your account

Of course but how often does that happen compared to the times you just need a $20 bill?

Re paying bills. You set up the accounts in your account at the bank or credit union.

Then you just access those accounts and apply a payment to them from your chequing account.

You get the receipt after you finish the transaction.

I know how to pay bills online, been doing it for years.

But the question was if you can pay bills @ ATM.

Some people - night-shift workers, bartenders, bouncers - don't have the luxury of going to the bank at 3am, so they are pretty much forced to use an ATM in the "shady part of town". Buddha knows I've used my share over the years, and would have loved to have canine companions like Ike pictured.

So you use the bank? ATM's are open 24 hours. The bank isn't and just about anything you can do inside the bank, you can do on the ATM if not more......But I still use the ATM for withdrawing cash or paying bills.

This is an entire discussion I've had on other forums about finances. Without keying in a couple of pages, the main thing is that debit cards are not good --- they don't have the protections of a credit card so, I don't want them. 2nd, we're on a credit card basis, for 40 years, for about everything. We get $100 in cash out, and we're good for a year. All our bills, including utilities, are paid automatically via credit card where I get 5% back on everything. So, we've earned 10's of thousands of dollars over the decades by doing this. There is no reason, at all, that one can't handle their finances automatically, and not use cash, other than the odds-and-ends that might cost a couple of dollars, or going to a DQ to get an ice cream where you'll use cash. Everything else is on credit, with that 5% rebate.
I've never understood why people use cash when they can get 'free money' in the form of 5% cash-back. Just think, all your electric, gas, water, bringing you 5% back, along with all your food, gasoline, travel, entertainment. Why have a debit card? We've not paid a penny in interest in 40+ years of credit card living.
We had had several instances of fraud. In every case, we're coveted by the credit card issuer, no liability for us, and the worst that happens is that a new card has to be issued, which they do right away.

I use ATM’s when necessary for cash and send a picture of any checks that I receive to the bank that need deposited, so I don’t have to go to the bank to make the deposit.

Ok. For my own education, could you please tell me what company offers a debit card with the same protections? It would be useful if that were the case. You have a card that reflects on your credit score so it builds your credit? You can rent a car and the debit card will allow you a waiver on taking out insurance? And I assume you are totally covered for all losses on your debit card if someone gets the PIN and racks up the limit of your bank account? Will the bank cover you for overdraft fees in that case if you've written checks and your balance is 0?

I'm not being facetious. If you have a card that covers you for everything, I would be interested to have it as a backup. Of course, you wouldn't be getting 5% cash-back on everything you purchase, but the card would be useful in some cases, regardless, if fully protected.

My Bank of America Visa branded debit card has zero liability on fraudulent purchase, fraud monitoring and can be used wherever a Visa can be used.

It won't protect you if you allow someone to get your PIN number and they drain your bank account, I suppose they figure that we all need to have a little skin in the game.

They also offer a rewards debit card but I do not know how the rewards are calculated.

It's a bank branded card, just like Aunt Bea mentions, but a different bank. The same zero liability, fraud monitoring, etc. that she indicates and can be used wherever a Visa can be used also. My sister has a different bank debit card, and hers works the same way -- she had a problem with fraudulent use of hers once and the money from the fraudulent use was refunded to her within 24 hours and a new card issued. I believe most bank debit cards work this way, at least they do around here.

Thanks. I'll take a look at this. The only reason for anyone really to have a debit card is for overseas travel for the things you cannot use a credit card for. In my case, I use public transportation when I go to the UK every year and it's cash only on the bus. Everything else is credit card.
I still do not understand why 'everyone' wouldn't want to put everything on a credit card and essentially get 5% off --- utilities (where companies allow this), insurance payments (again, if allowed), and everything else. I just don't get it why you would not take advantage of 5% discount on everything you pay for.
