The shaky Isles

New Zealand is living up to its name, the shaky isles, since the beginning of the week I have felt a number of quakes throughout the day, some a jolt others, shaking. I am sitting here and have just felt anther strong jolt, it’s not normal for us to have so many in a week. The east coast of the North Island, where I live, the scientists have found is very slowly breaking away,
Making light of it, if I lived for a few centuries longer I might end up over in Europe.

That must be somewhat nerve wracking!

You are probably used to them Bellbird, a bit blasé, where
as the rest of us would be terrified!

Stay safe, stay warm and don't come here, there is a war starting.

Mike.

Wow Bellbird, that is very alarming. I'd like to learn more. Can you please provide any links about the geology of that region? Is the Pacific plate dragging the eastern part of NZ down into a trough?

Edit - by trough I'm wondering about the subduction zone but my memory of such things is very rusty ATM.

I've always wanted to visit New Zealand and I'm a fan of Brokenwood Mysteries.
What worries me the most is that New Zealand isn't a large area. I wonder where people would go to avoid an earthquake there.

Bellbird - Hope you can stay safe.

N.Z. Is virtually the same size as the UK. Area wise.

Hi Warrigal, The Pacific plate is slowly moving under the Australian plate, seems you Aussies can’t let us go, lol, a very interesting article in Newstuff, an interacting map shows NZ, messy break up with Australia, seems we have been together all along, !

I live in the part of the world where the ground does not move. I've always been amazed at the attitude of "earthquake" people. The ground heaves around, and they say, "Darn, it was an earthquake." They say it the same way I describe when it's "sprinkling " outside.
I have to wonder at the size of the quakes . Do they see the ground breaking open in front of their eyes ? The roads rocking and rolling unsafe for vehicles and humans.

Mike, you don’t get used to them no matter how small, you never know how many will follow or when they will stop. Sitting upstairs the lounge swaying, how do you get used to that.

When we arrived in Wellington in 2018 we saw a huge wrecked building a block away from our hotel. Our local friend told us that it had crumbled in the 2016 7.8 earthquake. That felt a little too close.

Well, if the Tasman floor is pushed upwards by the Pacific plate as it moves westward under the Australian plate, we will be one land mass again.

Not in my lifetime though.

By the time this happens human beings may not be around any more - either extinct or flown away to colonise the universe after having completely trashed our home planet.

Sorry, I'm in a very dark mood today.
