The Simon and Garfunkle thread.

"Old Friends" describes two old men sitting on a park bench "like bookends." It has the line, "How terribly strange to be 70." Must have seemed that way to them at the time, when they were in their early 20's!

My own favorite is Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

I never really liked popular music much until they came along. They awakened me to a whole new genre. I'm still a fan of theirs, and keep a 3-disc CD of their music in my car, and play it whenever the mood strikes me.

I am unable to pick a favorite S&G tune because every single tune they did I found to be amazing. The one tune that reduces me to tears, especially if I'm in my cups, to any extent, is "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her." (see post #1)

Interestingly, it makes me recall a specific, very dark, cold, snowy night in Chicago, as I walked the UC Campus with a gal I liked, but knew to keep my distance, as she was very "different." We were both sixteen, at the time. She invited me back to a friend's apartment, as we walked, after a movie date. The friend was out of town. I knew what we'd end up doing, but the vibes she put off, that night, were too weird for me to even begin to get interested.

Maybe I am moved because of regrets for a missed score. More likely, it is because I feel sorry, to this day, that I never really understood this (to me) strange gal. We never saw each other, again, after that night.
