The USA Penny is going away.

I have a change jar with many coins in it...lots of pennies. Wonder if I should turn them in....before I cannot
The end of production won't be until next year, and even then, existing pennies are protected legal tender under the coinage act of 1965. Businesses can legally refuse to accept pennies, but businesses can also refuse to accept large bills like $100s.

I have a jar full of coins and lots of pennies. I will have to get them deposited to my bank change machine before too long. It is too heavy so will have to put in smaller jars. No more pennies sounds good to me.

It seems insulting to all the women named Penny? And the song" Pennies from Heaven" has no meaning, or a penny for your thoughts and the other expressions I like
It's entirely cultural and American

Now just hold yer fuzzy horses there, fella! 😁 I am not a "little old lady" still in my 60s. I own no change purse. But by diddles, when I go through McD's for my hot mocha, it comes out to $4.02 and you can bet I give them either four ones and two pennies or a five and two pennies to get a dollar bill back. @fuzzybuddy

Just an FYI, If you are not using the app at McDonalds you are paying too much.

What about a gal named Brandy? Or April? Or Violet? How about John for men?

Or Karen? Karen is the worst one. It’s a beautiful name for a female and it is maligned all the time with no thought whatsoever to how the real Karens of the world feel.

Same with me, David. Huge containers filled with pennies (others for other change)... but it's not chump change for me because I've been saving them like that for about 30 years. But way too much of a headache to haul them somewhere. You could buy a LOT of fudge with my pennies. Save a hunk of maple for me, eh? 😁 @David777

I have 3 containers I've been tossing coins into for decades after bringing any change home. Only the penny container is large. A nickel/dime container is moderate size I sometimes manage to use by pushing them into some machines like parking meters. And a quarter container is small, useful for laundry.

I do the same thing at the grocery check out. However I do not hold up the line doing it. I know exactly how much money I have in bills and what denominations they are and how much change I have in my pocket and what denominations those coins are BEFORE I get to the check ot line. I also have an rough estimate of how much the bill will come to. For example I might know that I have at least $40 worth, but I'm not sure if it will go over $60. So even before the cashier starts to ring up the items I throw two $20 bills down.

Then I get another one ready to throw down as I watch my total go up on the screen. When the final total comes up I immediately calculate what additional bills and or coins I need to put down so that I will get as close to an even amount of change back such as you do in your example. I also try to use the dirtiest, nastiest, most worn out bills and coins first to get rid of them. In doing this I cause a minimum amount of delay in the check out line.

What drives me nuts are these little old ladies that just stand there while their groceries are being rung up and then finally when the cashier says "that will be $67.45" then look up as if to say "Oh! I guess I had better open up my purse now and start rumaging around for my money!"

I mean what were they thinking? That those groceries were going to be free?

I also try to spend one dollar bills and pennies as quickly as possible because take up a lot of room in either my pocket or wallet for very little value. So I try to get quarters back in change and $5 or $10 bills back in bills. But sometimes getting one dollar bills back is inevitable. I usually dred that, especially if I am at Walmart because sometimes the one dollar bills you get back in change are so nasty and beat up that I hate to even touch the things. When that happens I try to unload them as soon as possible. Not as bad but also annoying is when you get those crispy new ones that stick together.

They exist here too. Also, men who are staring at the cash register and are slowly pulling the old, fat wallet out of their pocket and sorting it to pay. Then comes the change from the pocket; that goes faster.

If you use self checkout, it’s pay by card only.

I didn’t want pennies to go away in Canada. So thankful now.

They should get rid of dimes. Two nickels work fine.

I hate that. I absolutely refuse to use a check out that is card only. I have gotten to like the ones that will take cash however because when I get cash out my credit union's ATM I always get it in all $100 bills. That way I can carry more cash in my wallet without it getting too fat. But you do need to have some bills in smaller denominations. That's where the self check outs at Walmart come in handy. I use them to break $100 bills. And they can be gamed so as to get pretty close to the change you want.

Say I buy a few groceries and the bill comes to $42.78. Now if I put the $100 bill in first it will give me $57.22 back, most likely in the form of two 20's, three 5's (for some reason Walmart seldom stocks their self check out machines with 10's) two ones, two dimes, and two pennies. That's 7 bills and 4 coins. So I've exchanged my $100 bill for 7 bills and 4 coins. However, say I have 3 pennies in my pocket and 3 ones in my wallet. I put those in FIRST. That leaves me a balance of $39.75. Then and only then do I insert my $100 bill. That way I get back three 20's and one quarter. So I've exchanged four bills and three coins for three bills and one coin. A much cleaner exchanged. :)

Oh and by the way. I also arrange my money in my wallet in decending order from the largest bills down to the smallest, amd always facing in the same direction.

Some of you might thing I'm OCD about the money I carry. And you would be correct. :)

I don't like dimes either. They are pretty, but they are so small and light and too easy to lose in the cracks of your couch or your car's seat. So I spend them at the first opportunity.

Same for me with not using the card-only checkouts. Not the same with the $100s, though... I used to do that all the time but then about 8-10 years ago, it suddenly turned around and store people look at ya like you're some criminal trying to use counterfeit bills... acted like they never saw one before (self checkout wouldn't take them at all) and at one place, the cashier actually called out to the manager *loudly* "Hey Bill, she's trying to use a $100 dollar bill, what shall I do?!" Lordy, color me embarrassed. Sheesh. @Trade

I haven't had that problem with the self checkouts. But when I check out at a line with a cashier they will take that majic marker thingy they have and scawl across the bill with it to check to see if it's legit.

It most likely goes to the $20 bill before the coin and folding money don't
cost more to make than their worth. With 10 Billion humans on Earth and
only $10 Trillion in gold that leaves $1000 for each human.

Sort of obvious digital currency is the
future. Hopefully not the memes.

Panhandlers will take Debit cards. Same at Casinos / racetrack betting and sports.
Look at the multi billionaires, mostly stocks / shares of things not currency.

Digital Currency will mean and endless supply, no debt like Trillions. Just happy shoppers.

Pop paid me $.50 an hour to drive the hay bailer tractor every summer. $2 a day.
He gave me a check at the end of the Cut / Bail. Plowing, disking, field work, but
not spreading manure. Purchased my 1st car with it and Graduation suits.
My biggest setback was getting shopper's time.

1st auto was a pickup, 1st car was a lemon. Don't get a lemon again was his advise. Scratch Dodge.
Push buttons shift tranny crapper!

Me too!

I doubt that it will ever happen due to concerns over criminal use and counterfeiting.

A nice crisp $1,000.00 bill would make a great wedding or graduation gift or make it easier to pay cash for a vehicle or other big ticket items.

Most people don’t realize that large denomination bills were printed until 1945 and finally taken out of circulation in 1969.

We need to DEMAND that at a very minum the $500 and $1000 Bills be bright back. The $100 Bill which was adequate as the largest Bill in July of 1969 when the higher ones were discontinued is now, due to inflation, only worth $11.47 in 1969 dollares. And the $50 is only worth $5.73.
is like having had a $10 Bill back in the 1960's. That's ridiculous!

I used to walk a lot and go through parking lots to get to one store to another and I would sometimes find dollar bills on the ground. It happened quite often and made me wonder why they would lose them.

I'm ready for this. Like others I have containers of pennies doing no good. I guess I should cash them in while I still can.
