The World is Twelve Inches Away.

I live alone now, am unstable walking, and live on SS and a small pension, but I travel the world via You Tube.
I have been doing this for a few years, but now it is an important outlet for me.
I sometimes revisit places where my wife and I used to vacation, or I travel to places in the world that interest me. The best way to do it is by viewing the vacation videos that ordinary people post. That gives you a better feeling of immediacy, and of being there, than the professional travelogues.

A few years ago, my son and his wife went on a trip to Egypt. I got his itinerary ahead of time, and my wife and I "traveled" with them day by day via You Tube. I was able to track their plane flight, and found videos of a take off from Newark photoed from the passengers seat, and another of a landing in Cairo. We walked through the lobby of their hotel and saw their room. Looked out the window at the traffic down in the streets. We took a train ride with them, dancing in the aisle with a group of young people. Went on their boat trip up the Nile with an entertaining guide. Saw all the sites they did, with a group of people accompanied by a tour guide. Great fun.

I have also bookmarked a group of Zen Garden tapes for myself. I can just "sit outside" look at the flowers and watch the Koi swim by whenever I feel like it.
There are fantastic places to see and learn about in this world. Places I would never get to even if I were well. You can even leave the planet via NASA if you wish!
All it takes is a little thought and imagination, and you don't have to pack, or spend a dime!

I'm glad you are getting so much enjoyment out of Youtube. I also watch it as much as my data restriction allows. There is no end to what you can find videos on. In fact my husband asked me just yesterday to try and find him one on how to fillet a catfish.

You can visit many places on Google earth as well, driving down the roads or walking down beaches. I made a few videos for my granddaughters while in Thailand last winter, but normally just take tons of photos.

Yes. I do that too. Have gone back to places from my childhood by satellite. Once traced Drake's circumnavigation around the globe. I'm a very well travelled guy! :shark:

Good way to solve a problem and relive the joys of the past. It's hard when a spouse has recently passed. I'm glad youtube has provided this pleasant escapism for you. You handle your challenges intelligently.

Thanks, Chic. Its not a melancholy thing. I think its great for any of us, to get out of our little parochial boxes and find out
what the world is really like "on the ground" so to speak. Even for those with the time, ability, and resources, you can't cover it all. There is too much to see and learn. You can do it so much faster on the Web, see things closer, and be educated about places better than if you were actually there. My wife's cousin has a Winter home on Maui. I have traveled the island via my PC, seen and know more about the place than she does. I'm not knocking actual travel. There is certainly a whole other dimension to the real thing, but I think there is a huge chance to expand horizons, that many are missing. Its a new world out there. The buildings in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Dubai, make cities like New York look like hopeless antiques.

O.K. You told me that its a bench you are sitting on in your profile pic, but you have your arms extended in front of you.
The pic is too small for me to make out. Are you holding something, or exercising? When I first saw it, I thought you were driving a sulky,

Oh you bet. Its an amazing resource, not to mention pretty darned funny, and just plain stupid sometimes.

My mother really enjoyed tv late in life. She also traveled the world that way and even went back in time. She was a big Lawerence Welk fan and looked forward go the reruns every Saturday night. ;)

All we need now is for YouTube to incorporate some type of aroma dispenser - I've found that so many places I've been to have a distinct odor: the salt air of the ocean, the resin smell of the pine forests, the car and truck exhaust of NYC ...

Clever way to travel, Underock.

I read this and thought, I want a Zen Garden and Koi Pond in my living room for when I'm just putzying around here! I've just bought a Smart HD TV and the installer connected it to my computer so I'm wondering if I could have youtubes of Koi and Gardens on the TV?

Maybe, but I found an HD trailer of one you order for a fee and the picture quality is excellent. I'm not sure about the music though…sounds more american indian than japanese to me…but still good. I prefer japanese because I use to live there. Zen music sounds a little too eerie and redundant after awhile so it doesn't relax me. I passed over a youtube that had classical music but now I can't find it. This one is at Balboa Park in San Diego:

That is great, Lara. the bigger the picture the better, and in HD? How great is that! The series I have bookmarked from YT is called Zenchantment. I guess the music is what you describe as "Zen". I like it, myself. You can buy their tapes or discs, but. I doubt they are the latest technology.
How I envy you. Enjoy your pond. Just don't try to jump in! :stop: Peace,

...the skunk outside my window. Ratchet up the imagination! Thanks Phil.
