Things I've Learned

We have 4 racks that hold a chord of wood. They get split at the beginning of the spring and by next fall most of it is dry. We are usually a year ahead of time for seasoning wood.

Your Woodstocks look similar to ours.
It’s a lot of work but rewarding. I like the idea of being self reliant when it comes to heat. Our house gets so warm that our heat pump shuts itself off plenty of times.

Been up here just over 30 years now, use propane and wood heat and love it. Both work well even when the power goes off, which still happens.
Half an hour or so (depending on the roads) from a village for the basics in supplies.
This is perfect

I attended a webinar today about filicide in a domestic violence context.
About 30 years ago there was a shocking incident not far from home. A man shot and killed his children, shot his wife before taking his own life. The woman survived the shotgun blast but lost a leg. She is an example of post traumatic growth, Ann O'Neill is now an academic and founder of the not for profit Angelhands
Today she spoke of holding your fear in one hand and your courage in the other.

I ran into a saying not too long ago that I like:

"It doesn't have to make sense to anyone but you."

This refers to people that criticize your life choices. People who will tell you that your interest or life priorties are "crazy" or "don't make sense."

A related one is "you don't need to justify yourself to anyone."

These are not absolute. There are common sense exceptions. For example, it would not include things that are illegal or hurt people. Choices that affect your partner or someone under your care are an exception, unless they are okay with it. And most workplace choices do need justification.

I am thinking of personal choices: my priorities, my hobbies, the books I read, the music I listen to. Someone thinks my taste is bad, or I the stuff I like is stupid or weird or low quality. I don't care anymore. Someone thinks my money priorities are weird or wrong. I don't care.

I have learned that life can change in an instant. That with age you realize things you never really knew and that time seems to speed up in your late sixties..........
