Things that don't make sense.

Just to beat a dead horse, those now come in USB 3.0 as well. Probably faster, but I haven't priced them.

I supposed the *intent* is to encourage people to purchase the music directly from an online sales platform or library, or at least to discourage theft and pirating. There's little else the law can do.

Yeah, I understand that part, but if you already purchased the song, and it's on your computer hard drive, and you can put it on an MP3 player, then why not just eliminate the MP3 player and load it onto a hard drive in your vehicle or a boombox. That's the part that doesn't make sense to me. I'm still missing something.

I once had a waiter roll his eyes at me and make a smart remark for doing that, it was crab alfredo and a diet coke. Is it the word "diet" that bothers people? It just means it's sugar free. Regular coke tastes like carbonated syrup to me. I also drink black coffee with pie, but it doesn't get the same eye roll. Why do the drink and food have to match? Is it okay to have a salad and a regular coke?

All my old hippie friends religious convictions were based on the fact that it wasn't their parents' religion but something new and exotic from India or China.

No...you've missed the point Della.. it's not what food go together.. it's the fact that people are eating 10,000 calories then washing it down with Sugar free drinks...

We use it in some soups, gravy and there is a dip my wife makes that has some in it. Use like a spoon full for a batch. It's pretty salty stuff. I know it is eaten spread on bread not sure I would though. Has a remarkable resemblance to wheel bearing grease.

Ah then it is the word diet. I don't think of it as "something for slimmers" but just a type of cola. Most of the diet coke drinkers I know are thin and just choose it for taste.

Anyway, I quit drinking all cola a few years ago and always order water now which also irritates the waiters, probably for Nathan's reason although with the prices of the meals today they still get a whopping 20% tip and shouldn't be angry with me.

Maybe I should just eat at home where the food police can't see me.

If I'm out for a meal I almost always drink water.. or water with a little blackcurrant juice in it... here in the UK water is not free like the US... so our waiters don't care whether we drink water or not

In the UK is the major source of a waiter's income from tips, or do they also get paid a set wage? Here it wasn't common for those working as wait staff were only paid $1/hr and had to declare 8% of tickets sales as taxable income, even if they didn't actually get that much in tips. Also some tip sharing with other staff, depending where you worked.

No absolutely not... waiting staff get paid a salary like everyone else.. there is no pressure on any diner to tip... therefore people mostly tip if the service has been good... but not to supplement their salaries..

I believe America is the only country that allows this to happen to waiting staff..
 
oooh and further to my last post.. as a consequence of not having to pay the salaries of the waiting staff.. when we're already paying for the meal which covers the chefs salary as well ( as it does everywhere in the world ).. and the running of the Restaurant... we're not hoofed out of a table after an hour to make room for someone else.. nor are we pestered every few minutes by the waiter asking if we need anything,..

Usually just once during a meal a waiter will come and ask if everything is ok.. then we're left to our own devices, and to call a waiter if we need one..

Generally people will leave a tip of around 10 or 20 % if the service has been good but no-one is obliged to do so..

Your way is so much better. I hate tipping. The restaurant owner should pay his staff a living wage they can depend on and if that means high food prices, fine.

Getting back to things that don't make sense.

Why has standard tipping gone from ten percent to twenty percent in my lifetime? People will say it's inflation but that's covered by the higher cost of the meal. So back when a nice meal was ten dollars you left a one dollar tip. Now that the same meal is fifty dollars that should be covered by a five dollar tip.

On a side note, my husband does taxes for many of the waitresses in town. You would be shocked at how much money some of them make. One made $83,000 last year plus gets lots of government money because she's a poor single mother.

Now it all makes sense!

Eventually they retire, come here, and post the fantastic life they're living at 90. Taking cruises to Thailand where they climb the mountains, cooking up thick steaks that go with their vintage wines and hummingbird liver pâté, trying to decide which yacht to use this weekend because both jets are in the shop, riding bulls in the rodeo in Argentina, etc.

This is something I don't understand. Diet cola tastes horrible. Coke is my favorite drink, but damn even I pass on the diet version.

Each to their own of course.

I drink coke..I can barely tell any difference between coke or Pepsi and the diet versions..

years ago.. diet cokes were horribly over sweetened.. but not now.... unless you buy cheap own brand stuff

When I say Coke, I mean Coca Cola. Never been a Pepsi person. The only difference between the two is that Pepsi has more sugar in it.

My partner only drinks diet sodas. She's a Pepsi person. So if I'm out, I might steal a can. But it truly is out of desperation. I believe I could tell the difference quite easily. They're marketed that they taste the same in forever, but no for me.

I do sometimes get a hankering for Cresta. :D

My huzz is not thin but he always drinks diet sodas when available; he says that the regular sodas are way too sweet (he has almost no "sweet tooth" at all). So I assume that there are others who drink it for the same reason. And if someone is thinking, "Then why don't people like him drink unsweetened tea instead? Tea is better for you than diet soda.", he hates tea.
