Things you used to always have

Number One on my list would be:

Books of matches.

- used as a 'gapper' for Points on the car.
- as a 'shim' to keep the 8-track player from double tracking
- and of course, the need for fire.

Others on the list:

- Church Key
- packets of salt and pepper, 2 saltine cracker packet, all from a fast food outlet.
- Map of some state you might visit, never did, but forgot to throw away.
- Last tool you used and might need again, just in case...

- never 'gloves'. We were tough in those days!

Living in the north, lock de-icer was considered to be a glove box essential. Ironically, on those really cold days when the door locks would freeze, the de-icer was safely locked - inside the car.

Why a piece of string?

Haven't had many cars, well not since the last one was so vandalised in 2011. However, always had a photo of my Father on the visor.

One item I had in the glove compartment was: a pair of tights, in case the fan belt broke. There for emergency repairs. One driving teacher gave me this tip and maybe silly to say but while the tights were there, fan belt never broke!

I'll answer this slightly different, as I've no car currently

I always had a bottle of Spruce Beer and a bag of cheese puffs, once a week on a Thursday. It was a special treat. Spruce beer, either white or brown, depending on the manufacturer, isn't available here in my home country. So, I dearly miss it as it was a very special taste experience.

Money for a phone call ?..long gone are those days.. try finding a public phone box these days ..much less one that takes coins !

Currently in my gloves box I have

The lightening charger lead for my phone
The Locking Wheel Nut remover..

Some face masks, and hand cleanser..
Baby wipes..

Still got my Pass for work in there as well.. despite now being retired..

.. and yes I have gloves in there.. 2 pairs in fact.

The funny thing was that a couple of years ago when the mechanic at the garage was working on my car, he was tickled pink , because he said in 17 years as working as a mechanic he'd never known anyone to actually have gloves in the Glove Box!

A tire gauge, owners manual, insurance and registration cards, straws, napkins, and disposal gloves.

I added 'Used' because I was thinking back to my first cars that only had a single
'Glove compartment'.

Now you have center consoles, cup holders, etc.

In the minivan we had, there were two glove boxes, two center consoles, eye glass holder, and more cup holders
than people.

I was just having some fun with this.

I notice some people say they carry their Insurance docs around in their car. In the Uk we're actively told not to carry any vehicle documents in our cars in case of theft of the car itself. If we're stopped by the Police for any reason while driving, we're given 7 days to take the documents to the police station..

Conversely in Spain it's illegal to drive without documents on Board..

oh that reminds me of something else.. Salt sachets..the free ones I get from KFC et al.. very handy if I'm out and buy a take-out snack somewhere , and don't get any salt..

Always an extra pair of sunglasses as well.

Duct tape and a small flashlight, a slot screwdriver, registration, a pair of pliers, one of those round brushes to clean the battery connectors.

Previously 8 track tapes, then CD's. Now, no more CD players, so have flash drives that hold hundreds of tracks.
Flashlight, extra sugar tabs, extra glasses, sunglasses.

Due to the proximity of coffee cup holder and glove compartment (right below coffee cup) I've refrained from having anything in it as I've had various items soaked in delicious (but now undrinkable) coffee.

plastic pill bottles, roll of tape and a pen or a couple charging cables. The lock has been hit so often it's just "yuck" yes, I'm lazy on that cleaning too.

Fuses

A pouch of Bull Durham smoking tobacco (usually kept in a plastic bag). Nothing cut road film off a windshield like this stuff. Just wet it a little and rub down the windscreen and then rinse.

Things I listed were from the far past.
Cars don't have Points anymore and few of us have an 8-track player.
Like those little windows called 'wings' that was your A/C sometimes...

Many early vehicles did not have enclosed cabs and driving to church with the family on those cold Sunday mornings required everyone to wear a pair of gloves.
