Have anyone on here met any of these types of people?
What do they do about it?

THINK they are sick : Hypochondria
PRETEND to be sick: Munchausen's Syndrome.

The Internet has made hypochondria more common.....when people used to come in the store and say 'on the Internet I saw that I have all the symptoms of.....' my heart used to sink.

Packaging leaflets don't help either, as they have to list every side-effect anyone has ever suffered....even one person.

Trying to get people to achieve a balanced view can be very difficult....I usually stop listening..

Good looking nurses make me sick!

You're confused, TG - this isn't the "Lies" thread.

I had a MIL that was a textbook definition of hypochondriac.

My sister had a boyfriend, whenever you asked him "How are you doing, Tom?" his answer would always be "OOOoooooohhhhhhhh".

Like you Phil, I've known around 5 or 6 people like that......I got to the stage where I never asked them how they were as I didn't want to listen to all of their imagined ailments......

:grrr:

I can remember at work one day, I asked an elderly customer how she was, she said she was alright and then proceeded to tell me the problems her husband was having with his *****, not only that she went into detail.:redface-new:

I stopped asking customers after that.:D

No need for long discussions on my actual health details.

If I'm asked how I am, I usually just answer, "creaky". It's true. Nothing more to be said.
If I'm not feeling too well then I say, "Crook as Rookwood***, but I'll live". Again, no more details required.
If I'm very crook I say, "Bugger off and let me sleep. When I wake up, bring coffee."
What else needs saying?

***Rookwood is Sydney's largest necropolis.

Thats a really devastating illness in its self. Some experts compare hypochondria with anxiety disorders. especially obsessive-compulsive disorder. Just as someone with OCD has to check that the lights are off a dozen times. the hypochondriac can`t resist researching and checking his or her symptoms..

Although hypochondriacs may think that internet research or lab test will reassure them, its never enough .. The key is to break the cycle of worrying and checking with some therapy and maybe anti depressants.. the longer it goes on the worse they become , well in most cases it does.. I have seen them in the wards where I worked. and the stress of it makes them ill even though they have nothing to worry about.. you can`t convince them..no way would I ever ridicule someone who is like that they need our help..

I think they need our help a lot less than the people with the real afflictions. It's a question of triage. It's also a question of whether they actually believe they are ill, or whether they are doing it for attention.

I don't really agree with the OCD correlation - there are more symptoms than just repetitive behavior that would have to manifest in order for that to work.

On the other end of the spectrum, knew a guy once when asked, "How ya doin'?" would ALWAYS exclaim with great enthusiasm, "GREAT!" Gave me the creeps. Nobody is great all the time. Nobody.

I have a ''friend'' at work..the worst thing you can do is ask her how she is...because she will tell you..starting with her toes and working her way up..

It would be quicker if she told me what wasn't wrong with her..

she goes to the doctors at least twice a week...she has had every test available..and still nothing..

Her handbag is like a pharmacy...

It must be a form of attention seeking?

Looks like the problem here lies with her doctor and her pharmacist who dont give a damn.

I know several in the hypo or munch categories that should have their own well that's the way it is or has to be category. I know seniors in particular who are trying equate and treat like their parents were a half century ago. They fail or don't want to understand that 50 years more technology and/or experience means they do NOT have to go down like their parents did over a 1/2 century ago. People don't have to or necessarily age like their parent's or elder of a half century ago. I recently cited a senior who is simply waiting for the day they have to use a cane like it's a privilege rather than do some basic exercise and therapy which even his old doctor recommended. These seniors like to act like they know it all and/or have everything under control. Sadly seniors are not the only ones acting like this.

My niece is a Hypochondriac and also suffers from panic disorder and Agoraphobia. She is 37 years old and has had these illnesses her entire life. She stays in her darkened upstairs bedroom all day and will only come downstairs in the evening (for a few minutes, not sure why), but not for meals or to visit with guests. Her mother, my sister, has to take her meds and meals to her. My sister has had a heart by-pass and a few strokes and TIA's. It is a horrible situation. I have offered to pay for her to get treatments, but this has fallen on deaf ears. Short of having her committed, which is what needs to be done, I have no other ideas. My sister has told me that if I seek a court order to have her committed, (because I have threatened to do so), that she will disown me. I told my wife that maybe I should just because it is what's best for everyone.

Thoughts or comments?

There are some people you learn to just not ask that question, "How are you today?" Seems like they are just waiting to tell someone about every ache, pain, and perceived illness they have or could have. And, I am one of those who will always reply, "GREAT!" If something hurts, I know I woke up. The Good Lord has given me one more day to enjoy this life and to learn new things.
