They did the same thing here in Los Angeles, CA. Bus benches have 2 or 3 of those to prevent anyone from sleeping on them.
It seems mean, but when someone is sleeping on a bench no one can sit on it. Many people who need public transportation are elderly or have medical issues that make them unable to stand for 15 - 30 minutes waiting for a bus.
 
Why ?... where are they supposed to sleep if they have no home?... In someone's garden..in the doorways of a store.. what harm is there in allowing them to sleep at night on a bench in a park...?
 
I don't have a problem with that. Some homeless people are pretty inconsiderate. While I do empathize with their plight, the rest of us shouldn't have to suffer because they want to sleep out in public. Give them a place to sleep somewhere where they won't bother anyone.

The problem is that they also sleep on benches during the day.

In the US, homeless people are allowed to sleep in a lot of places; sidewalks, some parks and nature areas. Virtually any public space is fine as long as their shelters don't pose a safety hazard or disrupt people's businesses.

It's not a question of want-----and shelters are considered too dangerous by many, and many don't want to observe the rules of the shelter.

yes I agree not good to have them sleeping on benches in the daytime.. if there was a way to police it, then that would be ideal... bit like traffic wardens..bench wardens.. no sleeping on the bench until after dark... .

It is not merely at night. Drunks will sleep on them in the middle of the day. Besides, the OVERWHELMING % of homeless are homeless precisely because they are addict/alcoholics. A person must really hate themselves to ever allow them to have no place at all to sleep. no friends, no family, no car not even a tent. what did they do to get so cut off from anyone who might help ? perhaps sounds harsh but it is the truth.

We have those police in our larger cities. They'll wake them and ask them to move during the day. I've seen CCTV footage of the same police bringing them blankets and water at night, and probably a quick reminder to move on in the morning.

I understand that many, probably the majority of homeless are addicts of some kind.. some not until they end up on the street , homeless..

However many are homeless due to MHI... or loss of employment, marriage breakdowns and unable to pay rent.. etc.. we have to have compassion for those people...

No I agree, not for their own personal use, but they have as much right as you or I, surely, to sit or fall asleep on it.. as long as they don't set up home on it...

I don't mind if homeless people sleep on a park bench - day or night.
It's a different story when they sleep on bus stop benches.
 
There are homeless shelters in every city. They probably don't like sleeping in homeless shelters because of the noise, or maybe afraid of the other homeless, or maybe they're thrown out due to their behavior, or maybe they can't sleep due to body odor in the air etc etc

So maybe we should re-evaluate the conditions in the shelters. Maybe have mandatory private showers before they are allowed to stay. Maybe have 2 rooms where all the noisy ones must stay in one and the quiet ones in the other.

I don't know as I've never been in one but I can assure you that I would probably rather sleep on a city bench than sleep in a homeless shelter.

Showers are available but too few. Same with toilets. If you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you aren't allowed a bed. You can't take your stuff in with you; it's taken from you and very rarely returned to you. It usually goes immediately into a trash dumpster. There is very little supervision and fights and violence are indeed frequent. You have to sleep on top of your shoes and coat to make sure nobody steals them. Still no guarantee. Lights out is 9pm and check-out time is 9am, after a hearty breakfast of coffee and donuts, and there's never enough of either.

Homeless shelters are not pleasant by any means.

I have an extra dungeon, er, I mean room, in my house. :)
