@Bretrick posted this in another thread and I thought it raised an interesting question, so I'm started this thread to avoid threadjacking @Pepper and her thread.
Sometimes out of curiosity I check out a profile in order to see where they're located on the globe. Most of us are USA based many others are Canadian with the UK, Euro's and Downunder also present.
A lot of profiles contain little to no information as is their right to privacy etc... The lack of information in a profile makes it harder for the rest of us to err profile fellow members.
I wonder why people share or withold information about themselves. I for one do not live in Joondalup but it is my closest major centre so it gives you an idea of where I am but keeps some discretion.

I had a look at this profile.

Don't post anything on the internet that you wouldn't shout out on the street, (Anon).

I think my profile is restricted but I’m not sure.

If it is, I did it in an attempt to eliminate private messages, profile posts, etc…

The profile itself doesn’t provide much information but long time members that pay attention are able to get a glimpse of who I am, where I live, etc…

I’m always curious about why it is so important for some members to dig into the lives of random people, and I suppose an ever increasing number of bots, that they encounter on the internet.

Nothing to see here folks! 😉🤭😂

I have my profile open... it only has info on it that is of no great interest to anyone much less Bots...or baddies...

I have people blocked who I dislike for whatever reason, so they can't PM me anyway.... and it;s not possible for some weirdo who has just joined to PM me or anyone else until they've been a member for a certain length of time or made a certain number of posts.. if they are in fact a troll or troublemaker they've usually been banned from the forum long before they have enough posts under their belt where they can send malicious PM's..and even if they did where would it get them?

It's not as tho' we're putting our private addresses or email addresses on our profiles so I never understand why people have them blocked

You may watch my whole profile, but only yesterday I saw that I can put info there like country. I just looked at my profile. It only says female, 2 rabbits lol. I used to throw a lot of personal info on internet and stopped doing that. An international forum like this, sure, I can put it here, but I was on a Dutch forum, talking about personal stuff about a court case and people said: remove this, because they can find out who this is about and I did and thanked them. Reddit, watch out what you post there. Facebook, Bored Panda and even Dutch women magazines, they all copy these stories for content. They talk about very personal stuff like fights with family members and zjoot it's all over the place.

Or christian forums, used to be on a big one. There are also atheist forums that copy that stuff and make a list with 'crazy stuff nutty christians say'. I think I was on there too btw hahahahaha.

That Dutch forum where they warned me, it's Dutch reformed. People think that's idiotic, these christian crazies, so they copy stuff and put it on another big Dutch forum to have a laugh. One woman was always so open about her struggles and she was really kind, they just threw her personal stuff on that other forum. So I watch out a bit now.

I have given no personal information in my profile. But from my user name you may guess that I'm male and born in 1959.
But a lot of personal information is in my comments.

Nevertheless there are subforums as Financial or Sports, in which I don't write comments. This means that I'm just not interested in such things.

Your account is not restricted but you gave next to no information in the about section.

I believe my profile is open to members who want to view it.

@Aunt Bea, often times members will post about events and places that are geographically specific including weather, fluctuating prices, housing markets, rental costs, and more.

For instance, if someone says their rent for a 1 bedroom has gone up to $1500/month, without geographic context that number means nothing to others. Is it a great deal or are they being fleeced? Depends whether the person lives in a small town in Nebraska or Iowa or Calgary, or just outside San Francisco, in Parisian suburbs, or even the Australian outback.

Ditto food prices, distance to visit family, public transportation, etc.

This member limits who may view their full profile. then why post then? I can understand privacy just keep it to yourself not left the whole wide world know?

I have info in my profile but I limit who sees it to my friends on here who I follow. I don't like just anyone viewing it. Plus I never put personal info in that would fix it so others can invade my privacy.

My profile is limited. Limited access etc.
I've never felt any pressure or obligation to
any forum or site I am a member of, to post
personal or extra information, above and
beyond what I want. If that were to ever be
bothersome to another member, then that
is their feelings about it. I don't take it on.
