Micka, I notice that there is no kitchen, maybe just a fridge, not sure. The menui looks great but if you do not want to eat what is planned for that day such a shrimp are you allowed take out? How would that work?

This thread is one of the first ones I read when I came to Senior Forums looking for information from actual seniors about CCRC retirement communities.

I have an appointment this afternoon at my first choice. It's a non-profit but I plan to visit a couple more in the next few weeks. I'm not planning an immediate move but I want to be aware of possibilities should I have a sudden need.

My last move? To the grave, that's for sure. But on the other hand, I advised my wife to keep my ashes, that she at least can use it for spreading it on a snowy surface.

This place is called “ Age in Place “
As a person resides there, and your needs increase, you don’t have to move to another residence, the care is provided on site with no extra cost.
Starts as independent living……assisted living…..and so on down the road.

Per say, as the kitchen goes…..there is a fridge / freezer, microwave……no stove.
If a person wants to bake or cook requiring a stove, there is a community kitchen for all to use as they please.
A person can have small appliances……coffee maker, toaster, small countertop convection oven with air fryer, bake, broil etc.
If a person wants something else, like take out, going to restaurants, totally up to that person…..but…..the rate does include meals.
You can order take out and have it delivered.
I see the menu does give you choices.

I love to watch the YouTube videos about people living in vans, campers and trucks. I could never do it myself but I get ideas from them on ways to do things in my studio apartment. And living frugally. They do see a lot of new places and seem to make friends with other van life people.

Perhaps not a bad idea. But where to keep my books?

It looks like a great place. You are lucky that the rate doesn’t skyrocket when you need assisted living. At the end my friend was paying almost triple.

If a person has food issues……diabetes, allergies, vegetarian, etc……the facility caters to their need…..no extra rate.
If a person wants different portions……if you want more veggies, no potatoes, etc…..your wish is their command.
If you have visitors for meals…..your choice could be use of the private dining room, or service to your suite, or you could cook for them in the community kitchen.
If you and your guests choose the facility for a meal…..there would be a minimal charge for the guests.

I’m not sure if BREAKFAST in BED is available……will check on that one. .

Both my mom and my FIL were in lovely assisted living facilities quite near DH & me for a couple of years before they died. Those experiences were so positive that we became open to possibly moving to one ourselves at some point. Have to admit that the very long, draconian Covid lockdowns of virtually all senior facilities gives us pause though.

Should DH and/or I become unable to live without a small level of assistance and overseeing, I'd lean toward paying for an ADU to be built on the property of one of our children, assuming that would be acceptable to them. When we could no longer use it, they'd wind up with a rental unit.

One of the things I liked about your new home, MickaC was the invitation they extended to you for Christmas Day even though you couldn’t make it. It really shows that they’re a caring community.

My MIL lived with us for a couple years, then when we had to travel so much, we moved her into a close "Age in Place" facility like yours for years. She really enjoyed it!

Watch out for the women...they might be all over you like "white on rice" Mick...lol.

BUT, be aware, that if you find one you like - you should put your name on the Wait List (usually with a deposit) ASAP. We put our names on two lists 2 years ago and are moving up. One place, recently, told me that the current list is LONG! It can be 2-8 years to wait. Most of them will give you your deposit back in full when you take your name off. If you move in - that deposit is credited to your account.

We've only found one place that gives you 3 chances to turn them down before putting you back at the bottom of the list. Most places call you, and if you're not ready or interested YET, will skip you and go to the next - starting at the top of the list again the next time a unit becomes available. Again - only one other place, did not ask for a deposit. curious.

We're about 2 years from that final move and should be about to the top of the lists we're on.

I’m so happy that you’re pleased…..I hope you find more positives…..I have been invited to attend the same things, makes a person feel cared about and for.

I did leave a deposit of $200.00, in return goes against my 1st month rate……or if some how didn’t work out…..that amount is returned to me.

Have had regular contact with this residence, usually every 3 to 4 weeks.

This residence makes me feel like family, and not walking income.

Thank you Jules ....yes, I do think they are very caring…..they have keep regular contact since middle of last spring.
They always say…..if there’s anything they could assist me with to let them know.
I truly think I’ve found the right home for me…..comes with family at no extra cost. .

Now that I've seen it I'm comparing to my house. My house is not large but everything at home is roomier than the apartment.

They contacted me this afternoon and thanked me for visiting, etc. I know that's part of the pitch but as you said it makes a person feel wanted.
