Thousands trying to escape Florida....

I do hope that whoever are responsible for helping to clear up this mess and destruction are much more capable than the British government and councils , beause whenever we have disasters like this, they're still being used as an excuse 10 years later... for things not working properly or being fixed...

Disney has been torn to shreds over a decision to sell peanut butter and jelly sandwich kits for $10 to guests who are stranded during Hurricane Milton.

The theme park closed down ahead of the storm's arrival this week, but some resort guests found themselves stranded and forced to ride out the hurricane there.

On Wednesday, guests were afforded the opportunity to buy sandwich 'kits' for $10.

My financial advisor of many years and his wife just built their retirement home in Port St. Lucie. I reached out to him a few days ago to let him know they are were in my thoughts. He said they weren't affected by Helene but probably wouldn't be so lucky with Milton. After seeing 125 homes destroyed in St. Lucie Country I'm actually afraid to check in with him.

I am glad to see Milton didn't have as much overall impact as expected, although it was clearly bad.

Florida and Western North Carolina are a couple of the top areas in the country that have seen an influx of people from out of state. It makes me wonder if/how this will all change.

My father lived in both Englewood [on Manasota Key] and then Grove City, for the bulk of the 23 years [1970-1993] that he lived in Florida after retiring. As he approached 'old-age' he moved inland, away from the water.

He never experienced anything like this. He did twice have water in his yard, roughly 10 or so feet from the house, but never in it.

I don't know which is worse , living through the storm or living with the aftermath ?

We spent the morning out picking up stuff and raking. And raking. And raking. Oh, my aching back. No word on when the yard waste trucks will start coming.

Last year, a neighbor a couple houses down chided me for bagging up my yard waste after a 'cane, saying we were supposed to just pile it up.

I said oh well, what's done is done. They'll either pick it up or they won't. She humphhed for a while and gave it up. A few days later, the truck came down the street and picked up all the bagged yard waste and left the piled-up stuff until days later. I wanted to put up a sign that said "Ha Ha Karen, see who got their stuff picked up?"

I talked to my favorite waste guy and he said he didn't care what the "suits" at the County said, he preferred picking up the bagged waste.

So, once again, we're bagging.

At least some nice fall weather has blown in.

@oldman, I'm so sorry you had damage to your holiday home.... we can only thank goodness that you weren't there. Things can be replaced, people can't .. so we're all grateful here that you were at home...
Thanks, Holly. I will be flying down in a few weeks to line up the work that needs to be done. In Florida, we put mesh screening around our personal pools that sit right outside the patio. They call them bird cages. I guess mine was ripped to shreds when flying debris hit it. I had a bunch of junk in the pool, so I will have to have all the clutter removed and the pool sanitized and refilled with clean water. This includes cleaning the pump and the heater. If they are too dirty, they will be replaced.

I am going to have the pool repainted and the decking around it replaced. As for the roof, we will try to have it repaired, but if it’s in bad shape, it will also be replaced. We have an outdoors kitchen that will have to be inspected also. There were some looters that jumped our gates and broke into some homes to steal things, but our home wasn’t one of them.

We just went through this two years ago.

We spent six winters in Florida and a guy told me that they had a big gator in the pond- lake - swamp now.
He told me that they go from place to place on nights when there are heavy rains.
I wondered more than once if gators were moving around when the hurricanes hit.
