Threw my back out on Saturday

My back throws itself out maybe once a year or every 18 months.

I have told people the only pain I have ever had that is equivalent to throwing my back out is the pain of childbirth. It's that bad. I've had it so bad I could not stand up straight - walked around bent over if I got out of bed. It can be what they call blinding pain - it's so bad you have trouble thinking about solutions. Last time it happened I didn't even go to the Internet to query the best remedies. I thought maybe a heating pad would help so I went to bed with heat on it.

Turns out, that's WRONG. I should have tried icing it first.

They tell you to take Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Neither of them do much. Aspirin actually helped the most. Tried a muscle relaxant once - what a joke. Get to be dizzy and sleepy but still in great pain.

The solution is to rest and stretch, IF possible! Rest, ice, heat and try to stretch. Try aspirin.
Muscle relaxants work best but try to get a doctor to prescribe them!

Muscle relaxers do work great. My husband and I used to get these little orange pentagon shaped ones. They worked great. Hope you feel better soon.
It's a shame the way doctors are deliberately keeping people in pain by with holding medication which could and does, for many, help them to be well and independent. It should be a violation of their Hippocratic oath.

We had the opposite problem with ours. Since we had drug insurance benefits, he’d prescribe anything and everything. His prescription wings were clipped though. He was not allowed to prescribe harsh narcotics. That part of his license had been permanent suspended. I guess there’s pros and cons like anything else in life. I liked my doctor though. We had him for close to 13 years.
He was the kind of doctor who took his time. I never once felt rushed. I miss him

I agree. Those over the counter pain killers do nothing.
Only time healed. Walking was extremely painful, but necessary. Seems, while resting, the disc would bulge out, movement would "push" it back into it's confines.
2 weeks later, I am walking freely but I can feel, in the background, one wrong move and it could happen again.

If you are at a level 7 for pain, why are you going to work, unless you must for financial reasons or fear of losing your job?

Do you wear a brace at work? One of these things: 9 of the best back braces
I was on holidays when the injury occurred.
Pain has gone and yes, I do need to work for financial reasons. I return to work in 5 days, pain free. But if it was to happen again then I will more likely than not need to give up work or risk permanent injury.

Glad to see you are back and feeling somewhat better. How far away from retirement are you?
Where my husband worked, they negotiated early retirement if and when needed.

Since I have started on a Medicare Advantage plan, OMG, the pharmacy is always sending me texts telling me my refill is ready long before 30 or 60 days have passed. I just ignore them. If I need or want the medication, if it has helped me, then I'll go get it. If it was a "try this" med and it didn't help me at all, I ignore it.

But dang, on my pre-Medicare insurance, this did not happen! Twenty-five days would pass or I'd have to call in the refill myself.
Is this aggressive auto-renew a kind of Medicare Fraud?

Our pharmacy tries to push our prescriptions on us. One particular prescription I only take when needed and they keep saying it’s ready for pick up. On second thought, I think I’ll pick it up. lol. Our pharmacy is good šŸ‘

Update about my back for all those following this post.
Bulging disc has gone back into place. I had 6 chiro sessions which managed to get me back on my feet.
Taking life rather slower than previously.
I have been back at work for a week operating a plasma cutting machine so no lifting required by me.
My offsiders do all the heavy lifting.

The Kinetic 2500 CNC Plasma Cutter

Doctor viewed my x-ray and had me go for blood tests.
They came back with full blown type 2 diabetes. No more sugar for me.
Very high Cholesterol levels.
This morning I awoke and my eye sight was blurry, things are out of focus. Yesterday eyesight was not blurry.
Made an appointment for an eye test.
Happy times ahead for me.:)

You can reverse the cholesterol levels…I was diagnosed with very high cholesterol 12 years ago.In fact I was told I was at imminent risk of a heart attack or stroke.
They are now normal. And the doctors don’t know I stopped taking my statins.
I was also diagnosed as pre diabetic.
That set me on a health kick.I ate smaller meals and exercised.
I lost weight and that diagnosis disappeared.
And I discovered all that because of blood tests that a young trainee GP ordered when I insisted I was ill( it was Glandular Fever) but without them I would have been unaware.
Like me something else being wrong has made you aware of something you needed to know.

Yes, without throwing my back out these issues would not have come to light. Maybe until it was too late.
I have stopped all sugar and fatty/processed foods.
Taking one medication, Metformin until my next blood test the first week of April.

I'm going to suggest what I tell everyone over age 50 - Eat like a Vegan or at the very least, change to the Mediterranean diet. More salads, whole grains only, far less beef and pork, more fish and chicken, NO FRIED FOODS if you can avoid them (they are all so bad for the heart & arteries). And NO CHEESE or dairy.

I know this is the opposite of every meal we were raised on and yeah, you will grieve the loss of a simple grilled cheese sandwich. But I'm tellin' ya, these diet changes can improve your health.

You can have a grilled cheese once a month. But just taking all the cheese out of your foods and putting plant milk on cereal instead of cow's milk will make a big improvement in a few months.

If you look at the frozen food section, just stare at all the frozen convenience foods made with cheese and milk. Milk in the sauces and cheese in the recipe or as a topping. It's going to be tough to find affordable convenience foods when you knock the cheese out.

Once you start eating healthier, there's only a few things you can order at McDonald's. (Sorry McDs.) Even the Chicken Nuggets and Fish Sandwich are guilty of being fried. The smoothies are low fat, but full of sugar. Probably the plain vanilla cone is the lowest fat thing you can get at McDs, but it's dairy so no more than once a week.

So, don't go to McD's. Go to Subway or even Arbys. The Subway app lets you earn points toward food discounts too.

Sorry to lecture - I hope you feel better. Ask the doctor if you should try a low-dose statin for your cholesterol.

February 2024. A wrong move saw me with a bulging disc.
Happened again today.
Not as bad as the first time but still very painful moving.
Happened alongside my bed so was able to slowly lower myself onto bed.
I am hoping it does not last too long. All I have done so far is apply Deep Heat and taken Aspro clear.
See what I am like in the morning.
